Chapter 55: THE LAST WISH
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny's POV
I started getting my things packed up. It's been over a month since I started working here. I realized the pay isn't much. It is not even worth my extra hours of hard work. I felt like devoting aimlessly in this restaurant. If I have to calculate everything, I guess I can save enough money to go to school again after ten years of working here.
That's how little my compensation is. I calculated the money and I realized it is not enough for everything I've sacrificed. Although, I am very thankful for the training and experiences here.
I have learned to cook some meals, especially Mexican cuisine. I have learned how to interact with a lot of people. I've mastered the art of dealing with people with different personalities and temperaments.
I sighed as everything was packed in place. I have also written a letter of thanks and in a separate one, a letter of resignation.
I started walking downtown, carrying my little luggage with me. I started looking from left to right and I only see busy people walking to and fro. I bit my lip as I went along when somebody grabbed my arm all of a sudden.
"M-Mr. John?" I gasped. He grinned as he started gripping my shoulders tightly. "Let me go!" I screamed as I started twitching and moving away from him. Good thing there were some few people who saw what's happening. They looked at Mr. John and he let me go right away.
I started running as soon as he let me go, moving my way towards the hilltop. I got no choice all of a sudden because I noticed that there were some suspicious people who were also following me.
My heart started to race fast as I confirmed that they were indeed following me. I can't see where I am stepping anymore because I tried running as fast as I can. When I am near the hilltop, I can see two familiar figures.
"Mom? Tyler?" I muttered. Minutes passed when they realized it was me who was running towards them.
"Sunny!" Mom rushed towards me and I couldn't see the people following me as well. My heart went crazy even more. I bet they never noticed those people who were after me, or perhaps after the life of my mother?
"Why are you here, mom?" I asked her as she hugged me tight. She sobbed as she cupped my cheeks with both hands.
"I asked help from Tyler, darling. How are you? You looked skinny. I've been looking for you everywhere." She said as she turned me around and examined me closely.
"I've been fine, mom. I worry about you. Who were those weird people who were after you?" As I asked her, I could see the horror in her eyes.
"W-What?"
"I called you last time. I hope you followed what I said."
"So, it was indeed you…" She welled up with tears.
She told me everything. Those people who were after her life were one of her previous suitors. She didn't like his attitude for being aggressive and possessive at the same time so she rejected him. Later did she know that he belonged to those groups who were a threat to the society.
She feared her life, that's why Mr. Athkinson doubled his bodyguards for her well-being. Now, I know the reason why she is acting weird. I even thought something's wrong with her for being overly protective of me. She even told me to stick to the curfew she set whenever I return home from school a month ago.
"Mom, you could've said all these things to me, right? Why do you like to hide everything from me?"
"Sunny, I don't want you to worry that much. Please understand that I am also doing this for you."
Minutes passed, I told them everything that has happened to me. Both of them were very ecstatic that I have finally returned.
"Mom, we better hurry up because it's not safe here."
I looked around and noticed that the bushes around the hilltop were moving like crazy. It's like somebody is hiding behind them.
I looked at Tyler and mom. I never knew how I would tell them that somebody might be after our lives.
We returned home but I could still sense that somebody is still following us.
"Mom, please take care of yourself. You will never know when you'll be attacked. They are always after you and your life."
"I will remember that, dear. Please beware too. Limit your time in going outside the house. I also went to Tyler's parents to inform them to take good care of him, too."
I swallowed. I feared for Tyler's life, too. I never knew how to accept all of this. It's like I suddenly put him at risk. He's not supposed to get involved in this. Moreover, I am sure he was seen by those people who wanted to put mom down.
What I didn't like about this period is the absence of mobile phones. I couldn't text or call him which makes things even worse.
I sat down as I looked through our glass window. Everything is not safe anymore. I am almost losing hope when I think about writing a letter to him. I asked mom about their home address. It is for me to assure that the letter will reach him right away.
December 12, 1958
My dearest Tyler,
Good day. I am writing this letter to tell you to please take care. I am always concerned about your life. I am so sorry that you're suddenly involved in this. I hope I could do something to make things better. I always wish you of your safety and well-being.
Let us see each other again at the hilltop after a week, next Monday, if it is okay for you? See you if I can. See you when I see you.
Sincerely yours,
Sunny
I sighed as I hugged my letter near my chest. When I inserted it inside the envelope, something crossed my mind. I grabbed my pen again.
"Smile before you open…"
I put on my lipstick and sealed it with a kiss.
