Chapter 12: FROM THE TOP
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny's POV
I followed her with my gaze.
I could say being a librarian requires a lot of determination and patience. You got to face a lot of people from all walks of life. Considering this place is a public library, I can tell she's really kind. She smiled at some of the students borrowing more than five books. Her aura is really light and charming at the same time. Her personality could match almost everyone she meets day by day.
She loves readers of all ages. She's the most patient librarian I came across all my life. However, I tried remembering everything from my past but I couldn't remember a single memory I have with Miss Marlyn Ang.
Am I really too dumb from my former past that I haven't even remember this kind of struggle? Am I in a different body, mind and heart while these things are happening?
My goodness! If I didn't come back from 2020 to 1957, I wouldn't know I am a non-reader even if I am already fourteen years old. This is more than heartbreaking that anything that has happened to me.
I loudly sighed that the people beside my table turned their attention to me.
"Sorry," I whispered and smiled in an awkward manner.
"How are you doing, dear?" Someone tapped my shoulders that I couldn't help but twitched to confirm if it was really Miss Marlyn.
"Yes, it is just me. Are you bored already?" She sat in front of me again, this time, she placed a lot of books that seemed familiar.
"These are children's books. I also let someone prepare copies of worksheets for beginner students." She looked at me and nodded.
"T-Thank you so much, Miss Marlyn."
"Please don't thank me. Do that if you will learn how to sing the ABC song for me today."
"The alphabet is very easy to sing." I confidently pulled a notebook and opened it. It is still happening. The dancing characters.
"I know you could sing it well when you could memorize our alphabets." She got my hand and opened it for a stretch." You also need this," She added, taking over my hands.
She started showing me the first five letters. She pronounced the sounds of the letters in front of me. She pointed at the first letter and made me take a look at it very well.
"A, B, C, D, E, Please read it this time." I looked around me and I could see the people around me simply observe what I am doing. It is really embarrassing and not a good idea.
"A, B..." I bit my lip as I looked down. I wanted to cry. I felt like some people were laughing behind my back.
"Dear, don't mind them."
"But, I can't help it, Miss Marlyn. I pity myself for being both stupid and a burden to someone."
She chuckled. I could feel her amusement as she shook her head. She held my hand and smiled again.
"Please remember, you will never be a burden as long as you're willing to learn. I can say you're a fast learner. Please try memorizing the 26 letters of the alphabet. I will test your memory by letting you sing it for me. Would that be okay?"
I nodded. She's about to leave when I tugged the hem of her blouse. She turned to me again.
"I will let you study quietly but you have to remember the characters and their sounds."
She stayed with me until I got familiar with the 26 letters of the alphabet. Now, everything is making sense.
She worked for more than three hours after she left me on the table. I tried remembering and repeating the twenty-six letters as well. When Miss Marlyn returned, I tried singing the alphabet song. She clapped her hands out of excitement.
"Wow! Thank you for working so hard, dear. You got it all perfectly. I guess that would be all for today."
"Really, miss? Why are we only learning alphabets today? You see, I am a fast learner. I could learn another set of lessons from you in the next two hours."
"Dear, I'd love to. However, I will be working half-day today. I will go to the vet clinic to have my dog checked. Libby is not feeling well."
"Oh, I am sad to hear that, miss. I hope your dog will recover fast."
"Thank you, dear. I guess I will have to see you tomorrow. Please come at the same time as what you did for today."
"I will do that, miss. I will always do my best for you to be proud of me."
"Let's put it into action. A little learning everyday will be everything someday."
"Whoah, so this was the reason why I became an inspiration in the year 2020. So this was Sunny's six decades in the making." I said dreamily while smiling like an idiot.
"Were you saying something?" Miss Marlyn asked me while nudging my shoulders. I smiled in a very awkward manner.
I became silent all of a sudden. Well, who am I to brag today? I am only fourteen years old, a non-reader and a dependent daughter living with her mom. How can I be proud of myself?
"N-No, miss. Please don't mind me. Shall we go now?"
"Yes, sure. I will be going outside the library and probably wait for a bus to ride. Will you go with me?"
"Yes, miss. I will accompany you outside the library. But I will not get on the bus because our home is just near the school." I smiled when I answered her.
"Wow! That's great news. Now, I can be sure you will not be late for our everyday lessons. I believe in you dear. You also have to believe in yourself as well."
"I will always remember your advice, miss."
"That's great! Let's go!" She gently held my hand as we walked outside the biggest library in town. Miss Marlyn is always enthusiastic in life. She's a natural optimist. She's also kind and patient in everything that she does. She's really one of a kind, a blessing in disguise for me.
I am always grateful.
