Chapter 13: WHO'S THAT BOY?
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny rushed towards home. She needs to return home before her mom does. As much as she wanted to tell her mom the good news, she might get scolded. Her mom only wanted her to keep the house clean, stay in the house and do the chores.
Sunny couldn't help but to be weary. Does her mom really intend her to be a non-reader or illiterate for her to easily manipulate her? She knew that if people didn't know what to do with their life, they intended to follow rules. Sunny thinks that being a person without any formal education will just be contented with their life. Those kinds of people will just be slaves in whatever their masters will tell them.
She reached the doorstep, panting and catching her breath again. She was more energized compared to hours ago. She glanced at their wall clock and she still has seven more hours to go before her mom would arrive.
She looked around to see what she could do. Something that's worth doing while waiting for her mom. She went outside to rake leaves falling from their front yard. After a couple of minutes, she's done with the work alone. She went inside the house to check if her mom left some extra tasks for her to do.
She pasted reminders to buy some ingredients from the grocer for her to cook.
In the end, she got what her mother told her to accomplish. She got the folded paper on the table. She looked at herself in the mirror as she touched her cheek.
She couldn't help but to stare at her younger self in front of the mirror. She smiled as she even pinched herself. Something in her still hopes that everything is only but a dream. However, if she could feel a slight touch of pain, she would tell everything is real after all.
She got the folded paper again and headed to the grocer. Good thing she was somehow familiar to the market because it's just near their house. Her mom reminded her not to go outside. However, how can she follow it when they have no meals? She has to find ways. Afterall, her mom listed all the possible things she could buy. I guess the people at the grocery store were already familiar to her and to her mom.
Sunny suddenly had a feeling that her mom used to give her a list of ingredients listed on a piece of paper. She will then give it to the cashier or someone who will do it for her.
Gosh, what life did she have ahead of her...before she even got here from the future? Was she really abandoned by her mother in an indirect way? She walked directly to the grocery shop. She could see a man waving at her right away.
"Over here, Sunny!" He was beaming with a smile. Sunny came towards her right away. But the truth is, she doesn't know him that much.
"Here you are again. C'mon, don't be shy." He offered his hand to her. She awkwardly smiled as she gave her the list of ingredients.
"Hmm, what do we have here?" He examined the list of ingredients listed by her mother. He smiled and put it inside his pocket. "Same as usual, please follow me Sunny." He walked inside right away. She followed him as she looked around. The grocer was wide and spacious. She then thinks that it was the man who owns the grocery shop. She could see a lot of things and foods to buy. From the wide variety of snacks to ingredients of a perfect meal. It's all here.
She saw him grabbing a grocery basket and started moving along the aisles. As he glanced at the list, he started to pick some cans of essentials. He also picked a cooking oil, some snacks and some herbs and spices.
He glanced behind him and he could see Sunny tailing him. He told her to come closer.
"Here are some of the things your mom wanted to buy," He smiled as he looked at Sunny from head to toe with malice. Sunny felt goosebumps all of a sudden. Why is his smile creeped her out? She glanced at her chest and she could see his name plate.
"Mr. John Hanes"
"T-Thanks Mr. John." Sunny held the handle of the basket but John also held her hand that's holding the basket. She gasped as she suddenly looked around.
"I can handle it, Mr. John." She forced a grip to the basket but wriggled the grip of Mr. John from her hand.
He smiled in a meaningful way as he let go of her hand. She sighed with relief, however, it made her knees tremble. She suddenly feared his presence around her, now that the grocery is not really crowded.
"I guess I have to pay it at the cashier now?" Sunny said as she immediately walked past Mr. John. He is the one following her this time.
"Don't worry," He said, meeting her gaze as Sunny faced him. He looked at her, hovering her with her gaze as if undressing her. "...it's already paid."
"What do you mean, Mr. John? Did mom leave some money here before she went to work?"
"Hmm, yeah." He answered as he looked at her again. Sunny wanted to slap him right away, however, she doesn't want to start a scene.
"Very well then. I'll be going, Mr. John." She was able to get the basket from his hands. She went to the cashier right away. The female grocer helped her pack the groceries. Right after that, she headed home, never turning back.
Sunny could feel that even if she's getting far from the grocery store, there were two eyes watching her from behind.
When she reached their house, she locked the front door right away. She also shut the windows, and she has covered them with curtains. She also checked the backdoor and locked them all up.
She was suddenly attacked by anxiety because of what she encountered. She's not very familiar to Mr. John, however, there's one thing that she's very sure of. He couldn't be trusted.
