Chapter 11: FATED, HATED
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny and her mom sat in silence. They've shared meals during breakfast, her mom will go out to clean other's houses, she'll be back later this afternoon.
In the end, she will be left with a paper and a pen.
"What am I going to do with this?" Sunny asked with raised eyebrows. Her mom looked at her and suddenly avoided her gaze. She bit her lip that she didn't know what to do with her.
"Well, you can draw what you liked, you know, the things that you want to express."
"What? You promise to teach me how to read. What is it this time?"
"Sunny look, I am busy okay? Wait for me tonight. I will return home by 7:00 PM." Sunny glanced at their wall clock and it was 10:00 AM. She sighed and nodded. Even if she's not really trusting her mom and what she's telling her, she must keep her faith to her words.
As usual, she dressed up like a single lady. No children, no responsibilities. She put her best vintage green polka dotted dress and turned around in front of the mirror.
"How do I look, dear?" She smiled at her daughter. Sunny looked at her from head to toe.
"You look stunning, mom." She weakly replied. Her mother patted her on the head and she almost leaped with joy in going outside their house.
She stopped walking as if she forgot something. Sunny is following her up to their fence gate.
"Please take care and look after our house. You're all alone here so don't go outside."
"Y-Yes, mom." She replied as she looked down. Her mother tapped her head once more as she walked past the fence. Sunny followed her mom with her gaze and sighed once again.
It got clearer to her this time. She never understood anything from the book because she's a non-reader in the first place.
She went inside their house and she returned to their dining table. She saw a thick, old notebook and a pen. She slowly opened the pages and all she could see was the blank space that stared at her back. She gripped the pen and started drawing stick figures. She drew a circle, it became a happy face then. She had drawn a hair on top of the smiley and a long gown. Next to her is another smiley with long hair.
She stopped when she realized she had drawn her personal assistant. How she missed all the attention that she's getting in the year 2020. Sunny could assume that there's nobody who doesn't know her on that particular year in the future.
Being stuck on her past is the most ridiculous thing that could ever happen to her at the moment. She did not even wish for all of this to happen to her. All she ever wanted is to live long, write beautiful stories with lessons, empower women and live life to the fullest.
She also tried drawing the model of the car that she drove all the way from year 2020. The worst thing is, it also disappeared into the thin air.
She had drawn many books she has ever written. She couldn't even count all of them anymore. She glanced at the wall clock again. It is already 10:30 A.M. She suddenly got a brilliant idea. She stood up and looked at herself in the mirror. She tried fixing herself to look decent.
She has to go back to the library to ask for help. If her mom couldn't have time for her, the librarian could definitely help her. She remembered that librarian who was really kind to her.
She made sure she locked all the doors of their house. She ran as fast as she could, overtaking those people who were sauntering on the sidewalk. They even noticed her being in a hurry.
The librarian greeted her with a smile as she panted, almost catching her breath.
"Hello, young girl, we meet again,"
"Hello! I haven't got the chance to thank you, ma'am."
She chuckled as if feeling really amused.
"Oh, never mind my dear. Come inside, the books are waiting." She encircles her arms around her shoulders as they went inside the public library.
She instructed her employee to take over her table as they sat down to one of the tables.
"Dear, what you have told me last time really troubled me. I started reading about your condition."
"What condition?" I couldn't help but frown because she heavily misunderstood me.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Well, I have read your condition and from it, I could say you might have dyslexia."
Sunny couldn't believe what she heard from the librarian. She bit her lip to stop her tears from falling. She just couldn't accept the fact that it was the result of her mom's negligence in taking care of her education.
"No, ma'am. I knew the reason why." The librarian nodded as she started to explain why it happened to her. She even told the librarian that she's a 'non-reader' to start with.
"Oh, I see. That means your mom didn't really tell you even the alphabets or numbers. Well, we could consider you learned a few sounds from the things around you."
Sunny scratched her head and met her gaze. She couldn't help but to cry in front of this kind librarian.
"If you considered me a dyslexic, you're wrong because I am even worse than that."
"Dear, don't be too harsh on yourself. I promise I will help you." She looked at her as she held both her hands.
"I am Miss. Marlyn Ang, the officer in charge of our public library." She added with a smile. I always admire her sincerity as she offered her hands. I took it and shook it gently.
"Here, take this," She offered her handkerchief to her.
"Thank you so much, ma'am."
"I am willing to help you for as long as I am here in the library. All you need to do is to go here every morning. We'll be having so much work to do."
"Ma'am, it is an honor to be taught by you."
"It's a pleasure dear. Please don't hate your mom. I know what it feels to work the whole day, feeling worn out when you will reach home."
"I hope you're as understanding as most people in the world...because I am not like you, ma'am."
I am starting to hate my mom." Sunny kept the last sentence for herself as she closed her fist.
