Chapter 18: SECOND CHANCE TO LOVE
Read online · About 6 minutesSunny's POV
I know I am vegan.
At age 76, I know I already loathe meat. I refuse to even eat it anymore. Well, today, I am fourteen years old. I am young and vigorous to digest meat. I am still healthy and my body is young. Eating burgers during cheat days is really a great thing. I realized I never ate this kind of thing for a long time, already. I can't help but to feel very excited and nervous at the same time.
I closed the door as I bit my lip. I am stopping myself to smile a lot. Tyler knew my house now that he accompanied me up to the fence outside our house.
"I guess I would have to stop right here. I am just making sure that you will arrive at your house safe and sound."
"Thank you so much, Tyler. It meant a lot to me."
"It's a pleasure. Please take care and lock the doors of your house when you know that you're all alone in there, alright?" He reminded me. I can't help but to flash a wide grin.
"Okay. Thank you for the reminders. Please take care in going home, too!"
"I will!" He started to move away and I waved my hands as I followed him with my gaze. He's really very sweet to me. I moved quickly when I realized that I didn't prepare something for our dinner. Any time, mom will arrive from work.
I never thought we'll be having a longer time talking about random topics we think of. Tyler Sean is such a nice guy. As I talked to him, I could feel his sincerity and willingness to teach me until I will get used to basic reading.
Good thing I am so familiar with cooking that I was able to finish it for less than twenty minutes. It was fried meat with stir-fried vegetables. I also cooked mashed potatoes as our side dish. I am also surprised that I am humming and singing while I am preparing our meals. I feel really happy and energetic. All thanks to Tyler for letting me feel this way.
I heard a knock on the door and when I checked on the peephole, it was mom. I opened it and she went inside right away, wearing a weird face. She seemed mad as she met my gaze.
"We need to talk," She said as she sat on one of the chairs facing me. In between us is the table full of food I've cooked. I swallowed gently, not making myself guilty. I just avoided her gaze.
"We could talk after dinner. That seemed serious." She never replied. After I said our grace, we ate our dinner quietly.
I washed our dishes and after that, I sat in front of her as I rolled my eyes.
"Mr. John talked to me and he said he found you walking somewhere in town. Is that true?"
"So what? I got bored in the house. What am I supposed to do?"
"Didn't I make myself clear that you should stay inside the house while I am working? You might get yourself harmed."
'I will truly get myself harmed if I will stay in this house. If only mom knew Mr. John's true intentions, what would she do?'
I kept the last sentence to myself as I looked at my blabbering mom.
"Yeah...blahblah." I replied that made her glare at me. I chuckled as if mocking my mom.
"You should really consider what Mr. John proposed. Afterall, he's really concerned about you and your future. Aren't you happy about that?"
"Don't tell me what to do. As what I have told you, I would prefer to be a non-reader or illiterate than letting somebody decide what I wanted to be."
"Why are you becoming so hard-headed? Since when did you learn how to disobey me?"
"From the time I have learned that you abandoned my chance for learning." I answered in a straightforward manner that made her speechless.
Her mother stood up and walked out from their dining table and headed towards her room. Sunny also did the same as she went to her room and shut the door behind her as well.
She sat on the chair placed in front of the bedside table near her bed. She got the paper and pen that her mom gave her. She started to write the capital and small letters of the alphabet, from A-Z.
'One at a time, Sunny. One at a time...'
She let go of her pen and folded the paper and kept it under her bed. She almost forgot that her mother has no idea that she's learning on her own.
She looked at the clock and she realized that it is already eight thirty in the evening. She tucked herself on the bed and tried sleeping. All she wants is a peaceful night without thinking of the proposed plan of Mr. John that will just lead to nowhere.
Morning came and I started to prepare breakfast. Weird, it is already nine-thirty in the morning but mom is still asleep. Is she not getting over what happened last night?
"Mom," I called in a louder voice as I knocked on her door.
"Coming!" She answered from the inside. When I was about to leave her door, she opened the door. I was a bit surprised when she was just wearing her pajamas. Is she not going to work today?
I secretly frowned as I set the table for us.
"Sweetie, I will not work for two days starting today." She said in a very good mood. I couldn't help but to raise one of my eyebrows.
"Why? I thought many people needed your service that you shouldn't be absent?" I answered as I drank my chocolate.
"I realized that your learning is more important. I will be teaching you for two days, especially in math."
"Wow, I hope this will always happen. I have been waiting for this moment," That was pure sarcasm, and I am sure she got it that it made her quiet the entire time we're having our breakfast.
"We'll both stay inside the house. I will be cooking meals as you answer the worksheets I prepared for you."
"Worksheets?"
"I didn't have a good night's sleep last night because I made it all for you."
"I appreciate it mom, thanks." I smiled a little and it somehow encouraged her.
Well I guess being a stubborn daughter has positive effects sometimes. My mom really thought that I was just walking on the sidewalk, roaming without a purpose. She never knew that I am learning little by little in the library with people who are willing to teach me.
I couldn't help but to feel sad because I will not be seeing Ms. Marlyn and Tyler for two, straight days. I hope they will understand my absence. I will just explain what happened when I will be back in the library.
"We'll start at exactly eleven in the morning." I nodded as I cleared the table and washed our dishes. This is a positive start for me. I am sure of it.
