Chapter 25: LETTING HER GO
Read online · About 6 minutesSunny's POV
I could describe it more as a cold war between me and my mom. We ate our dinner but nobody said another word for the other. I looked down and concentrated on my food. Gosh, the age difference is killing me. If only I am not aware that I am 76 years old from the present year, I won't behave like this for sure. I will be an ordinary stubborn kid for my mother.
I tried glancing at what my mother is doing but I guess he's also doing the same, never wanting to speak another word to avoid any argument between us. Does she also regret what happened a while ago?
"Have you ever considered what we talked about this morning, Sunny?"
I looked at her reaction to see if she's being serious about what she just said. I took a deep breath and as I looked at her, I was out of words right away.
"Mom, how many times will I ever tell you that I am not going to do it? I am not going to agree about whatever you're going to tell me about." I said in a raised voice as I stood up. I heard her sigh as I started piling up the dishes for me to wash.
I can't wait to put them all in a sink and do my work and avoid arguing with her with nonsense words.
I went directly to the kitchen to start washing without looking at her. It's a bit annoying because she's been thinking about it most of the day without considering my feelings.
"Like what I am saying, it is all for your own good."
“Even if I don’t like it? How could it be for my own good when I am against it? What good will it benefit me?”
“Sunny, since when did you become very complicated?”
“I am not complicated, mom. I just want to let you know that you can’t always get what you’ve always wanted in life, that includes deciding for other people.”
“You are not other people, Sunny. You are my daughter. You have to follow what I want.”
“Then give me choices, if you insist.”
“Okay, alright…” I heard her sigh from behind me while I'm washing the dishes. I am keeping myself busy and I always avoid facing her. I might forget my current age and I will act mature more than my mother does.
“Mr. Athkinson has decided to let us stay at his house starting next week. That way, he could help you prepare for the enrollment for high school after two months.”
From what my mother told me, I guess I could trust Mr. Athkinson more than Mr. John, even if I haven’t met him even once. From how mom described him to me, he seemed to be a responsible man. I guess mom deserved happiness in the world more than anyone, even if sometimes, she’s being insensitive and annoying to me.
“Okay, seems reasonable enough.”
“I can’t believe I am like bargaining from someone older than me.” My mom said with a sigh. I couldn’t help but chuckle as I let go of the plates first and dried my hands on my apron. I hugged her tight that surprised her at that moment.
“Thank you, mom. You’re the best. You will not regret this one.”
“I wonder why you didn’t like Mr. John, though.”
I just don’t, mom. I don't like to think that you are going to entrust me to somebody we barely knew. I don't feel safe when I think about it."
“Hmm, is that an alibi because he was able to spy you for me while I am at work?”
“What? Of course no! That’s too childish for a reason.” I chuckled to hide my anxiousness. If only mom knew what is really happening then she will truly understand where I am coming from.
“Okay, whatever my daughter wanted. You know I always want the best for you, right?” She smiled as she cupped both of my cheeks. I hugged her again. This time, I could feel her warmth as she hugged me tightly.
From the time I went back to this year, it’s the first time that she hugged me this tight and warm. I can’t help but be emotional. I realized, at the age of 76 in the year 2020, I never had a vivid memory of my mom. I can’t even remember what she looked like. There isn’t any picture of her in my room, nor anything to retrieve to continue remembering her...and this?
This moment is too priceless for me to just let pass. I let go of her and think about my phone. I looked around and when I realized it’s 1957, my shoulders dropped.
“What is it?” She asked, giving me a weird look. Maybe, she was shocked to see me scampering without any reason at all.
“How can I ever capture this moment, mom? We don’t even have a camera of our own.”
She gave me a hearty chuckle as if feeling amused with what I have mentioned to her.
"We don't need a camera, dear. Priceless memories of you and me is enough to remember." She assured me. I nodded as I could relate to what she said.
"Okay, I will mom. Do you think we'll remember all of this?"
“I don’t worry about it dear, for as long as you keep this memory in your heart forever, you will always remember it.” She bent down on both knees at my height level.
“Even if the mind can’t remember anymore, it’s the responsibility of the heart to remind us about it.”
“Thank you so much, mom. I will always keep this in mind. Best memories deserve to be treasured forever.”
I went to my room and we all took a rest with a smile. I am so thankful that mom finally understood what I meant when I said that I don’t want to go to Mr. John’s house and work for him. I will always accept any options available except living under his care.
I don’t want to see myself regretting everything when I reach my age in the year 2020. I don't want to hate myself for not defending what I think is right for me. If my mom thinks that what she has been deciding is right, then for me it's not. It won't be always right considering that she will let me work with other people.
The next morning, I met Miss Marlyn and Tyler with a smile.
"I think things happen the way I expect in my life. I guess I never saw it coming, that's why I am so happy right now."
"Well, we are more than happier for you too, you know.
"Of course dear. Thank you too."
"I hope you will be happy with your new guardian."
"I am also expecting it, Miss Marlyn." I answered back. I guess everyone is also expecting that way. They were just all smiles to me for what happened.
"All I wish is for you to be happy, dear. If you're happy, you're also motivated to learn to the fullest.
