Chapter 34: THE UNSPOKEN GOODBYE
Read online · About 6 minutesSunny's POV
Yup. I was able to tell mom about what I am doing around town. I confessed that I am going to the library to learn how to read. I can see that she's teary-eyed by just looking at me.
"I'm so sorry dear. I never knew how you badly wanted to read and learn. I am so sorry that I never had time to teach you what you need to learn more."
"Mom, I understand. You're busy and you need to earn a living for both of us."
"You know what? I am lucky to have you as a daughter. You're all grown up with the way you even talk to me."
Gosh, mom. If only you know I am seventy-six years old now. I am old enough to compare to what you think of…
"I never got the chance to say goodbye to Miss Marlyn and Tyler."
"No worries, dear. I will let our driver get you to the library. I will also prepare some packed foods and sandwiches for you to share with them."
My heart swelled with happiness. I am so happy that my mom took what I said positively. I never thought that she'll support me this much. Her reaction to my thirst for learning is really priceless.
Mr. Athkinson's driver stopped in front of the library. I instructed him to fetch me at exactly six in the evening. I am glad that my mom truly understood my true intentions of learning more that I preferred going to the public library to have all the access to the books I wanted to read. I could see a lot of things or topics of books I could read to my heart's content.
As soon as I entered the library, I hovered my gaze around the aisles. The feeling is gloomy. For me, a day without going to the library is not great. It feels like my day is not complete. Now that I am here again, my heart started to race. It's as if expecting something great from what will happen from this day on.
I noticed that Miss Marlyn is not sitting on her table near the receiving area.
I looked for Tyler as I strolled to some of the aisles. I went to the academic book sections and my intuition never failed me.
"Sunny!" As soon as he noticed me approaching him, I could see his huge smile. He rushed towards me and hugged me tightly.
"Where have you been? You're absent for three days again. You're not a good student." He said between chuckles.
"I am so sorry. Things happened unexpectedly, you know."
"What was it? Any problem again?"
"No, not a problem. More of a good thing that happened."
"Wow! That's nice. What was it?"
I sighed as I smiled at him. He looked more enthusiastic than I am. As I looked into his eyes, I could see it glistened as they looked at me.
"My mother informed me the day before yesterday that we'll be moving out of the house because Mr. Athkinson wanted us to live in his house."
"Wow...that's nice. Did you meet him in person?"
"Yes. He's a good man. He went with us when we went shopping the other day."
"Oh, that's why you never arrived for three days." He said while nodding.
"Yeah, there were so many things that happened after that day. Yesterday, mom even scheduled a one-day spa treatment for us."
"Oh, that explains why," He answered. He looked at me from head to toe. I noticed that he couldn't take his eyes off me when he first noticed me approaching from this aisle.
"Yeah, I noticed you're more beautiful today, and you looked good in that dress."
This time, I felt like I wanted to kiss my mom from head to toe. She's the one who decided for me to wear this one. I never expected that this is one of the things Tyler would notice from me.
I felt my cheeks warmed a little. I hope he didn't see this silly blushing of mine. He tapped my shoulder and gave me a wink. With both hands, he pushed me from behind. I felt my feet followed what he wanted me to do. I walked out of that part of the aisle. I could hear him chuckle because of what he's doing.
"It's nice if we sit on the table we're always sitting on. It's more comfortable to talk like when we're sitting, you know."
"Oh, of course." I nodded and smiled. I understood what he meant. I know some of the people walking in the library were very judgemental. They might think differently if we talk in that secluded area of the aisle. Others may think bad about what we're doing there.
I tried looking around because there is someone that I haven't seen except from Tyler. He also noticed me for doing this one.
"Tyler, I have never seen Miss Marlyn around. Where is she?" As soon as he heard me, his facial reaction became different.
"We have a new librarian, Sunny." He said weakly.
"What? What do you mean?"
"She resigned from her job. She never told me the reason why. I tried to convince her to tell me the exact reason and he only told me that it is for her personal growth."
"She never even waited for me,"
"She told me to bid you goodbye for her."
I honestly felt like crying in front of Tyler. I never even got the chance to say goodbye to her.
"Let's just respect her decisions. I know everything happens for a reason. I will surely miss her the most." I said at last after his revelation.
"Yeah, me too. The new librarian looked so strict."
"Really? We must be careful then."
Even if I heard the sad news, Tyler made sure I still enjoy my library moments with him. He told me that Miss Marlyn left a lot of notes and recommended some books that suit me to catch up quickly.
Because of too much excitement, I read all of the notes. We spent the next hours searching for the books Miss Marlyn recommended to me. Tyler is very supportive as well. He made sure that I answered most of the worksheets correctly. He also helped me cope up with comprehension and grammar along the way. We sat on our table and decided to read the rest of the books silently.
"Tyler, I will never forget Miss Marlyn. She's kind and sweet." I said as I closed the book I'm reading. I sighed as I looked at the empty table where she used to sit and wave at us.
"Yeah, I admire her personality as well. She truly cared for your learning."
"Thanks, Tyler. Not only Miss Marlyn. I also wanted to thank you because of your support."
"It's a pleasure. You know what? Before Miss Marlyn left, she revealed a secret to me."
"Wow! Really? What is it?"
"I wanted to tell you about this one because she also wants to share this with both of us."
"Sounds interesting!"
"She told me that aside from being a librarian, she also wanted to be a good teacher."
