Chapter 43: WRITTEN MEMORIES
Read online · About 5 minutesAs soon as Sunny reached home, she took a quick dinner. She told her mom and Miss Marlyn that she'll do a self-review inside her room. They agreed right away as they've seen her very happy and inspired when it comes to learning.
What they didn't know is that she's more excited about the letter Tyler has given her. She couldn't wait to read everything he had written for her. Back in 2020, she could read countless emails and messages from unknown people. But it's the first time she felt very excited about a written letter from someone dear to her. So this is how it actually feels to actually receive one. It's more of a greatest gift that she could ever wished for.
She felt jumping up and down. She felt very ecstatic that she couldn't easily put everything into words.
She placed her books on her study table as she turned her back on the door. If ever her mom will check on her, the books will serve as her props.
Well, she’s into studying. They all know that. It's just that, the letter is really what she's excited all about.
She slowly opened it as she smiled.
To my dearest Sunny,
Sometimes, I wonder why your name is like that, not until I got to know you more. I realized you're like the sun who is giving light to everybody around you. Thank you for showing your true self. Thank you for sharing the happiness with me. I hope you will always remember your strength no matter how others might be bringing you down. Please take care and stay happy.
Sincerely yours,
Tyler Sean
Sunny folded the letter as what Tyler did and placed it near her chest. This letter might be a simple friendship letter but for her, it is already everything.
She decided to write a letter back to him as a form of gratitude. Sunny never realized the importance of written letters until she experienced it herself. It is indeed real that written letters are the best form of relaying messages to someone. She began to appreciate why she got in this period for the first time in months.
She got her pen and a beautiful piece of paper kept by her mother. She sat straight and smiled as she scribbled her reply message to him.
Dear Tyler,
I never thought you would mention the meaning of my name. Honestly, I never really think about my simple name until you make me realize this one. Thank you for your letter. I felt better after I read this. I am happy that aside from my mom, Mr. Athkinson and Miss Marlyn, you will be included as my support system. I think whatever I will achieve in the near future, it is all because of the people who never gave up on me. That includes you, most especially.
Please take care, wherever you will go. Take care in riding your bike.
Sincerely yours,
Sunny
----
The next morning, Sunny handed it to Tyler as she passed the hallway. For the both of them, it is possible that they could talk and have fun for as much as they like. They became distant only because of the gossip around involving the two of them. They tried to look around to see if there were other students gossiping about the two of them.
One thing that Sunny avoids the most is for Tyler to get involved because he's a scholar. Anything that will make Tyler's image bad will subject him to the possibility of not acquiring the scholarship again if gossip will continue to spread.
It means less meetings and conversations between the two of them. It means letters as the main channel of communication as of the moment. However, they make sure they are bonded on the weekends.
Sunny's mother only thought that she was going shopping alone. That's the reason why she is allowed to go to town.
She knew that Tyler was at the public library waiting for her. Somehow, she got this idea that they should be meeting on the weekends because they are barely seeing each other on the weekdays. They were both busy at their school work.
When Tyler saw her, she hopped on his bike right away and they headed to the hilltop.
"You know what? It's the first time I got a lot of letters in a matter of one week." She noticed that Tyler chuckled as if feeling very amused.
"You're weird…"
"Yeah, it's hard to believe but it is true. Thank you so much for letting me experience it." Sunny hugged him right away and he almost fell from where he's sitting.
"Receiving letters are a normal thing. It is only you who are acting weird."
"Never mind me, alright? I am just happy. I love to enjoy simple moments like this."
He only chuckled as a response.
"I hope we can live longer. By then, I can show you how technology works, probably by 2020."
"Speaking of the advancement of technology, have you heard the news? Sputnik 1 will be launched by the Soviet Union."
"What is that?"
"It is the first man-made satellite that's almost the shape of a beach ball."
"Well, that's the start."
"Of what?"
"I am sure the US will do something about it because Russia did it first. The U.S.A will build the National Astronomic Space Administration or NASA in the coming years."
"You know what Sunny? I am sure you'll become a scientist one day. I can see that you have the knowledge of everything that's yet to come."
"No. I prefer being a writer or a race car driver instead." Tyler laughed at what she said. Sunny frowned right away.
"Sorry," He said as he poked her arm. She massaged it while looking at him.
"Yeah, I am serious. I wanted to be either of the two. But if I can do both in the future, it will be great I guess."
"Yeah, those things that you said were very cool. I like it."
"What about you, Tyler? What do you want to be someday?"
"I don't know."
"What? You should know what you want as earlier as now. How could you inspire yourself to pursue it?"
"Well, I wanted to be a scientist."
Sunny gasped and chuckled at what she heard. It is Tyler who wanted to be what he's suggesting to her.
"See? So it is really you who wanted to be a scientist, huh…"
"I don't really want it. It's only a dream for me. As much as I would want to, I prefer being realistic."
"What do you mean?"
"I told you. I don't want to follow what my parents dream for me because I don't like it."
Sunny looked at his expression. She could see the gloom in his eyes.
"They wanted me to become a doctor, Sunny. Also, they want me to marry someone whom I don't even know."
