Chapter 17: SUPERHERO IN THE MAKING
Read online · About 6 minutesSunny's POV
Ms. Marlyn left after I showed her what I have learned throughout the two hours of being instructed by her. That was a self-studying technique, of course, before Tyler came in to help me. We almost spent a lot of hours together. We talked about a lot of things. Topics that's almost under the sun. All of the things we could remember sharing to one another. He also assisted and helped me with a lot of words seen in the basic books I grabbed from the library.
"I am glad that you're getting to know Tyler, Sunny. He's really great and a helpful student."
I nodded and smiled automatically. Yes, everything that Ms. Marlyn said is true indeed.
"Yes, Ms. Marlyn. In fact, he was able to help me with the words I find difficult to read."
"It's a pleasure. I am having fun teaching you too, so don't worry about it."
"What can I say?" I smiled back and she tapped my shoulders.
"We will always be here for you. I just couldn't personally teach you in your house since I am needed here in the library. I hope you understand."
"I totally do, miss. I am also thankful and lucky to know you both. Thank you so much!"
"As a treat, I'll give you both a chicken sandwich."
"Wow! It looked so delicious! Thank you so much, miss!" I can't help but laugh when I realized that we almost answered in chorus.
"You're both adorable, kids!" She answered with a hearty laugh. We noticed that she was getting something from her bag as we went outside the library. It's already half past eleven in the morning.
"Wow, how time flies fast. It's almost noontime. I will go ahead, dear!"
Tyler and I had a high-five as we received the sandwich Ms. Marlyn gave us. We thanked her as we parted ways. I noticed Tyler followed me while I walked forward. I stopped moving forward and turned my back.
"Keep walking," He whispered, almost nearing me. I followed what he said when I noticed someone is also following us. My heart skipped a beat when I realized it was Mr. John. He looked from left to right as he followed me. I guess he didn't realize that I'm with Tyler because there were other people who were busy walking on the sidewalk.
I saw Tyler overtook me as he walked ahead real fast. When I reached a place full of people, somebody pulled me sidewards as he covered my mouth. I looked back and it was Tyler, putting his pointing finger in between his closed lips. I bit my lip and I followed what he wanted me to do.
"Fuck," I saw Mr. John moved forward, not noticing a narrow pathway in between the buildings that's part of the town's city shopping center. I sighed with relief as soon as I saw him losing me in sight.
"I hate that person. He's a damned pervert." Tyler murmured. I turned around and hugged him tight, putting my arms around his neck. I felt his hands slowly caressing my back to comfort me.
"Thank you so much. I don't know what to do without you," Teary-eyed, I let go and looked into his eyes. He smiled at me as he wiped my tears with his handkerchief.
"I was about to go home when I noticed that man started following you right after we went outside the library a while ago. Do you know him?"
"H-He's my mom's friend."
"I don't trust him. I'm a man and the way he would look at you makes me want to punch him right away. I don't like how he looks at you."
"T-Tyler, I am scared." I couldn't help but avoid his gaze as I said those words. He held my hand and pulled me out of that narrow pathway of the building.
"Are you going home?"
"No. I am afraid to go home, honestly."
"I could accompany you wherever you wanted to go."
"But..."
"You said he's your mom's best friend, right? Is your mom home yet?"
"She will be home between seven to eight in the evening.
"I am afraid that Mr. John might go to your house. If you want, you can go with me. We can have lunch there." He pointed a small restaurant across the street.
"But, I have no money with me,"
"Who said you'll be spending a dime? It's on me, alright?"
He held my hand and we looked from left to right as we crossed the street. Well, in the year 2020, I have never been dating for a long time that's why I got too excited. My heart is beating fast all of a sudden.
But the situation is quite difficult now. Somebody is treating me instead of me, spending money on myself. I suddenly felt really ashamed as I looked down.
He opened the door for me and the wind chime greeted us as well. The room is cozy, with the chairs and tables having their pastel colors. The materials were made of wood but the small restaurant was enclosed with glass windows.
"Wow! This restaurant is lit!"
"Lit?"
"Oh sorry, I mean this restaurant is beautiful and cozy." Why did I said "lit" all of a sudden? That's so year 2020. I smiled in an awkward manner as I faced him.
When we spotted a perfect spot inside the restaurant, we sat right away. It's located in one of the four corners of the restaurant. The table was near the window overlooking what's outside.
He ordered two burgers and two glasses of sodas for both of us. I couldn't help but smile because Tyler is really thoughtful.
"Let me guess, is it your favorite food?"
"Hmm," I shyly nodded and it made him chuckle.
"I am sorry for bringing you somewhere else when all you wanted to do is to go home." He said in a worried tone.
"I should be the one to thank you. You saved me for today. If you didn't follow and check on me, Mr. John could've done me harm."
"You're always welcome. Besides, that's what friends are for, right?"
"I won't get tired thanking you."
He chuckled again and this time, he carefully placed my part of the burger and my drink in front of me. We ate and talked more about my life and on how mom will treat me.
"I am so sorry to hear that. I hope your mom would also teach you at home so that you could keep track of your reading progress."
"There's something I didn't tell you about, though."
He looked into my eyes and leaned closer to me.
"Mom doesn't know this whole thing. That's why I have to go back on the designated time that she would tell me so that I won't get caught."
I looked down as I sighed. He tapped my arm and smiled. "I understand," He replied.
We're able to finish lunch and he even walked me on my way to our house.
"Thank you so much for today." I stood on the doorstep as I waved at him.
"See you tomorrow!" He replied as he waved back.
"See you!"
Now, I have all the reasons to be inspired and learn more. I hate the fact that I am starting to like him...
