Chapter 38: SUNNY'S FIRST DAY IN SCHOOL
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny's POV
I walked towards the office to get my schedule. I always tell myself to be as independent as possible by going to the cashier all by myself.
"Hi, dear. I could gladly assist you. C'mon, follow me."
"Thanks miss. Sorry, I am very new to this place. Thank you for being so patient with me."
"That is a part of my job. I am also happy to assist someone cute like you."
"Thank you, ma'am." She smiled as I followed her. Turns out the cashier is very friendly. She even guided me in going to the room where my section is. I thank her because of her help and she tapped my shoulder as a friendly response.
"Please enjoy your first day. You know where to go whenever you need help, alright?" She said before she left. This is one of the things I want to do for myself.
I asked for my schedule instead of giving all the responsibilities to my mom. I badly wanted to discover things myself. I realize I am much older than my classmates but I don't care. I don't want to blame my mom for what happened to my education in the earlier years, either. Nobody has to be blamed for this. All I need to do is to step forward to where I am supposed to be going.
The important thing is, I am right here. Starting all over again even if it is hard. I am in section 4 and as I walk through the hallway finding my room, I accidentally bumped one of the students there.
“Hey! What’s the problem with you?” Someone exclaimed in a raised voice. A blonde girl, taller than me stood in front. She looked unhappy about what I just did.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you. That was just an accident. I didn’t mean to do it.”
“Just admit it, you’re stupid. Get out of my way!” She even pushed my shoulder that made me step aside. She passed through me like she owned the hallway herself. I turned my back and she even flipped her hair. She doesn’t seem to care about what I feel at all.
I know I’m tough but the baby heart inside of me wanted to cry out loud for being treated like this. I never expected that I will be bullied on my first day of school. My shoulders dropped. I felt discouraged all of a sudden.
I continued walking until I reached our designated room. Grade 7, section 4 was written on the door frame of the door connected to our room. I can see a lot of my classmates entered one by one. When they saw me slowly entering, I felt like all eyes were on me. It made my knees tremble a bit. I looked down but I also hovered my gaze around the room a little to see what they were doing. Some didn’t care and continued chatting with their friends. However, most of the students inside the room locked their eyes on me and on what I am doing. It’s like my every step did not escape those eyes.
I decided to sit at the back of the room because I can see those seats at the back were almost vacant, not until someone tapped me on my shoulders.
It’s her again, my bully.
“Hey, mind your seat,” She said in a very nasty manner. I turned around to gaze at her and I could see that she looked mad while folding her arms.
“That seat is vacant.”
“Oh yeah? How can you be so sure of that?”
“Because nobody is sitting there?” I said as I put my hands on my hips. Most of the students who listened to us chuckled, it made her frown. She looked annoyed already that she glared at me like I am the most hateful person in the room.
“Are you insulting me?”
“What is your problem? I didn't do anything and yet you’re being rude.”
“You don’t even know me yet, my dear.”
“I don't need to know you, just leave me alone!” I admit I can’t stand bullies. I don’t want to tolerate them because they mean all the harm when it comes to most students. I don’t see any problem being in this section. Maybe she is the problem herself.
“You’ll see! You’ll regret this.” She warned me. Instead of being afraid, I rolled my eyes and sighed as I took my seat from the back. The teacher went inside the class that’s why almost everyone scampered to take their respective seats as well.
“Good morning, everyone! Welcome to your first day of school! I hope everyone is doing well.” Our classroom adviser is a woman. I could say she’s approximately 26-34 years of age. She looked a bit strict with her glasses on, but I can see a smile on her face. Probably not a threat after all.
Everyone was silent and they were all listening to our adviser. I admire the kind of discipline old school learning has. I wish the present year will behave like this as well. It’s far different from where I came from.
“I hope everyone will take their chance to know everyone in the room. After all, you’ll be seeing the same faces throughout the year.” Most of my students cheered and clapped. Here goes the “introduction blah blah” part. My bully stepped in front of us. She’s very confident and sophisticated. I admit, she’s beautiful and charming. However, her personality sucks. She’s plastic and she only wanted to be with people like her.
“Hello everyone! I am Laila Connor! Nice to meet you all! I hope we’ll all get along well.”
She smiled but I don't understand why I am annoyed with how she said those words. I can't even feel any sincerity at all. For me, she's plastic and she never meant what she said just now.
“Thank you, Miss Connor,” Our teacher said as she smiled. My name was called after ten minutes. Everybody became silent again as they all looked at me from the back. I suddenly felt as if I am the most anticipated student in the room.
I can see the disgust on Laila’s face as it’s her turn to roll her eyes and avoid my gaze at me as she sighed.
“Hi everyone! My name is Sunny Grainger. I don’t expect to be friends with everybody but I do hope we’ll all be working together to help one another’s weaknesses and build each other’s strengths."
Right after that, I got a round of applause from my classmates. I also saw my teacher reacting the same way. I saw Laila closed her fist as I grinned at her. I realized I am no ordinary student. Well, I am not Sunny Grainger for nothing. I am sure this is the start of something exciting.
