Chapter 30: MOM'S UNSUNG HERO
Read online · About 6 minutes“What about it?” Sunny asked further. Her mom sat in front of her and touched her cheeks. She smiled but she could sense the gloom in her eyes. She even caressed her hair as she started recalling the past with her father. Sunny looked at her mother intently as she started talking.
“He was the most handsome man for me that day,” She started as she swallowed. It’s as if she had the memories come back even if she didn’t want to.
“It was more of a “love at first sight”...it was love when I first gaze into his eyes.”
“Wow. Mom, I have never seen that part of you in ages.”
“I kept myself busy throughout the years. I never thought I could love again after a failed relationship with your father.”
Sunny badly wanted to hear from her mother herself the reason why the two didn’t work out pretty well. She could remember a bit of those memories from 2020, the future year where she came from. However, she wanted to hear from her mother for her to clear things up. She has heard her father’s side. She wanted to hear from her mother this time. She felt very excited because she will be hearing her mom's point of view through her in person. It felt great more than anything right now.
“Did dad ever give up on you just because someone has more than you can offer? Is that it? Did he just fall out of love that’s why you two didn’t work out?” I asked a lot that she couldn't help but sigh. She looked at me straight into my eyes. She stared at them for a long time. After that, she bitterly laughed a little. However, I could see that tears were starting to form from her eyes.
"Are you serious?" Where did you even get that one?" She mumbled as she sighed. She held out a weird chuckle, not as a result of happiness but more of anxiety attack.
“I guess you’re hearing the version of the story wrong.” My mom smiled but it didn’t hide the sadness she’s been concealing for a long time. She wiped her tears with her hands as she chuckled again. This time, I felt guilty for asking a lot of questions from her.
“He loves me so much. I am very confident about it. I am the only woman he has ever learned to love with all of his heart.”
“Mom, I am very confused this time. I have learned that dad was a womanizer and he’s up to no good for you that’s why you both separated.”
"Believe me, whoever told you that, I wanted to give him or her a lesson."
"Mom, it's father…" That was a slip of a tongue. I covered my lips with my hands to prevent myself from showing her my surprise reaction too.
“It’s now my turn to tell you about that silly guy,” She chuckled. I’m wondering...mom should hate dad this time, right? I mean every wife would be angry when they learned that their husband is cheating on them. But upon seeing mom, I don’t know what to say anymore.
“After three months of us being together, I realized that he hasn't got much to offer. I was too young back then, too ambitious that I told her I wanted a life that he can’t give me. I was the one who truly initiated the break-up. How our relationship became so complicated was all because of me.”
I was left speechless. I was expecting that mom would just rant or vent out the things she felt during those cheating moments dad had caused her. I thought she would be bitter with all the experiences and heartaches he caused her. I was totally wrong.
The thing she just confessed to me was really out of my expectation. I truly never see it coming.
“How have I proven that he loved me so much? He spread rumors about him being a douchebag instead. He told everyone that he’s a kind of jerk that could dump anyone after any woman that will fall in love with him. The truth is, he doesn’t want me to appear as the ‘bad guy’ in our love story.”
I realized that father loved mom very much. Instead of mom receiving so much humiliation, father did whatever it means to save her out of it. He became mom's unsung hero for her lifetime.
I couldn't understand but tears ran down my cheeks as I listened to mom. It did crush my heart because dad has to suffer that much all because of her.
“And Sunny, your dad never left us. I was the one whom you should hate because if it wasn’t for me, he’s still alive until now.”
That shook my world that I fell on my knees sobbing as I covered my face.
“Mom?”
“We had a huge fight. I am about to leave our house and about to cross the road when a fast-running truck is coming. He saw all of it and pushed me on the edge of the road. He was the one who got killed instead of me. That’s why I am always blaming myself for what happened.”
The truth was too much to handle. I felt dizzy all of a sudden. The last thing I saw was my mom’s worried face rushing to me and everything went blank.
----
I looked around the place. It was a big mansion with a lot of open spaces. Approximately, it could accommodate fifteen to twenty people all at once. I remembered my own house in the year 2020 and all the modern technology I have invested in it. I wonder if Valerie missed me already. I know she has all the access to my keys, houses, and cars. Oh my gosh, my lovely cars! I hope she is taking care of all of them.
“Sunny, Are you alright?”She smiled as she held my hand.
“Yep. Everything is fine. I...I just remembered something.”
“I guess you’re also impressed with how big this house is, right?” She said between soft giggles. “Dear, it also has a swimming pool in the back! Isn’t it lovely?” She added in a whisper.
“Y-Yeah...wow. I love it, mom.” I said as I smiled awkwardly.
Oh my goodness, if only mom knew that my house is bigger than this mansion from 2020. The only difference is that my house is partly remote-controlled. I could open the doors with the help of voice command. It’s way too advanced. I am very shocked about how the people from this period survive in their day-to-day life.
I need to adjust. Even if it is hard, but I have to. I have to be patient and wait for the things that are yet to come. I wish I could bring Tyler to the year 2020 for me to prove that what I was telling him was real.
The things that were new to him were already familiar to me in the year 2020. At least if I have to bring him to the year 2020, I could show him what things I meant. At least I could prove to him that all of what I am saying is true, with pieces of evidence.
