Chapter 27: MEME-MENTS WITH YOU
Read online · About 5 minutesSunny's POV
"Wow! Are you serious about that?"
"Do I sound like I am joking?" He said with a smile as he is still pulling things from his backpack, not even paying much attention to me.
"Well, we're almost the same age. Do you think it won't be too awkward?" I said, following whatever he is doing with my gaze.
"What are you pulling out from your bag?" I tried to come closer to him this time. Now, I am curious about what he wants to do.
"I brought some snacks. We might get hungry while studying."
"Wait, did you know that the library will be closed today?"
He just grinned as I gave him an annoyed look. I turned my back as I opened my notes.
"Sorry, okay? The truth is, I never want to inform you about it even if Ms. Marlyn already told me to remind you." I gaped right away. He chuckled at the sight of it.
"My goodness! Why didn't you tell me? I should've not come here to disturb you..."
"What? No! The truth is, I am afraid you might not come here today. I don't want to spoil the fun that we might be getting here."
Gosh, I can't believe he could do this to me.
"So you planned all of this all along? What kind of fun do you mean?"
"C'mon, Sunny. Have fun, alright? You're one, serious learner. Let me teach you how." He said as he pulled my hand closer to him.
"Here, eat this." He gave me a chocolate bar as he smiled.
Kelly's chocolate bars.
I opened it and put the chocolate bar inside my mouth. I couldn't help but smile as I covered my lips.
"Delicious, right?"
"Yeah...I love it." I said as I chewed it. I realized that there's a small caramel inside the candy and you need to chew it for a minute or two.
I sat next to him, closer this time. It is because he's holding the book Ms. Marlyn left for me to practice reading. It's more awkward today because instead of Ms. Marlyn, I will be reading the contents of the book to him.
"Are you ready?" He said, sitting comfortably while eating his share of the chocolate bar as well. He handed me his water bottle for me to drink some.
"Hmm, yes I guess. As if I have a choice." He chuckled as soon as he heard me.
We started silent reading. I noticed that he's also reading his own sets of books.
"Were you looking at me?"
"What? N-No…" I said defensively. It made him smile as he shook his head. He continued gazing on the pages.
"Focus, Sunny. You need to read that in front of me later. Do you need a timer?"
"I hate you. Miss Marlyn never treated me this way."
"Sorry for that but I am your mentor now. We're two, different teachers."
"We're almost the same age."
"Well, I am more advanced than you when it comes to reading."
I whined as I gripped the pages of my book tightly. I have to overcome this one. I have to prove to him that I am awarded as the woman of 2020. I sighed as I looked at him again. Maybe I have to undergo this one again because this is the making of 'Sunny Grainger'.
He offered me some cookies. I got it from his hand without looking at his face. I put it on my mouth while reading the words from the book I am reading.
"Alright. Times up."
"What? Am I being timed? Since when?"
"No need to argue. I want you to start now."
Seriously, he's annoying. He's triggering my anxiety right now. I stood up and faced him. He looked calm with anticipation as he met my gaze and smiled. I slowly breathed and started opening my mouth as I read the pages before him.
This was the last page Ms. Marlyn left for me to practice because I was supposed to read it before her. However, things happened unexpectedly.
"Your confidence impressed me so much. You can even read with minimal supervision." He said while clapping his hands.
"Duh, I know, right?" I smiled as I raised my eyebrows.
"Intonation and pronunciation check, excellent!"
"Thank you!" I bowed and I sat next to him again, removing my slippers. He followed it with his gaze as he looked at my face.
"I never noticed you're only wearing slippers." He said in a worried tone. I sat in an Indian sitting position, hiding my feet from him. I suddenly feel ashamed that he saw what I am wearing.
"M-Mom is so busy she has no time to even buy me a new one."
"Sorry to hear that. You don't have to hide your feet. They're beautiful. I only noticed your slippers because it was a bit old already.".
"Don't mind it. If I will show my mom that I can read well before her, maybe she'll not hesitate to buy me things I wanted, including a new pair of slippers."
He nodded. He laid flat on his back as he rested both of his hands on his nape as he looked up.
"It must be hard being a scholar, right?"
"Yes. You have to maintain your grades just to be called a scholar."
"Why do you have to do this? I know you came from a well-to-do family, right? I am sure they can support you financially."
"I always have a choice. I don't want to see myself seeking help from my family all my life."
"What do you mean?"
"If I will depend on them all the time, I am sure it comes with a price later on."
"I am still confused."
"What I mean is, I don't want to see myself getting forced into something I don't want but I have to do it anyway because I am obliged by my parents."
"Hmm, you got a point. We both agree with that."
"I want to live my life as freely as possible. Being a scholar is just a stepping stone for them to prevent them from controlling me."
"We have different situations but the same idealism. I love it."
"I am telling you all these things for you to realize more, Sunny. Let's live our lives with freedom."
"Thank you, I will always keep it in mind."
"Go to the next page. Let's double time. You may not see results now but don't you ever give up something that you wanted to become someday."
Coming from a guy like him, I am more impressed. He's not the kind of guy I dated from the future. Even in 2020, I also dated random guys but I guess Tyler stood up from the rest.
I think I am not only liking learning but the one who's making me learn as well.
