Lily Hates Me: A Love Story · Angela Lynn Carver
Chapter 21
Read online · About 5 minutesDarren really pissed me off. I can't believe he openly challenged me. If Lily wasn't there I would have beat the living shit out of him.
But I knew I had to keep my cool for Lily.
It was mid-April so the whole school was planning for the spring fling. Lily wanted to go but I thought it was lame.
"Pleeaasee Jacob? I promise we'll have a ton of fun once we get there," Lily pleaded.
"No way, I don't want to go party with some snooty kids who don't even want me there," I said.
"I want you there," she said and made a cute face.
"Fuck Lily...stop blackmailing me with that face!" I said, almost giving up.
I saw Sarah coming our way. She had been getting used to me being around and doesn't act as nervous as she used to.
I was going to say hi but paused when I saw Darren behind her. Rage fueled inside of me when I saw him. What the hell is he doing here?
"Hey Lily," Darren said, completely ignoring me.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Darren and I have been hanging out since you introduced us," Sarah said shyly.
That sleek bastard. I bet he is doing that to stay close to Lily.
"Great! So Jacob and I were talking about the Spring Fling dance, and he is refusing to take me," Lily pouted.
"Oh really? If he doesn't wanna go I could always take you. You know...as your best friend," Darren said and smiled.
Oh, the fuck he will!
"I'm taking her to the dance," I said quickly.
"You are!?" Lily asked excitedly.
"Of course I am, I'm your boyfriend aren't I?" I said and glared at Darren.
"Great! We need to go shopping for a dress then," she said to Sarah. They started to talk amongst themselves so I turned to Darren.
"You better stop trying to hit on my girlfriend, you are starting to test my limits," I said in a hoarse whisper.
"Give it up, Jacob, you can't keep up with this good boyfriend act forever, I know eventually your true colors will come out once you realize that Lily won't give you what you want," he said in gritted teeth.
"What are you guys talking about over there?" Lily asked suddenly.
"Oh nothing, just guy stuff," I said and stared intensely into Darren's eyes.
"Oh okay, I'm glad you guys are getting along," she said and smiled.
Oh is that what's happening here? I had to be careful around this guy. He seemed like the kind of person who didn't want confrontation and preferred to stab people in the back. I bet he is trying to plan how to steal Lily from me in his head right now.
The night of the spring fling, I was getting ready to go to Lily's house to pick her up for the dance. Molly walked in with all smiles, she had a corsage in her hand.
"Wow don't you look handsome, here, I bought you this corsage to put it on Lily," she said and handed it to me.
"What's this for?" I asked.
Molly slapped her forehead. "Geez, this is what happens when you never take a girl out for a proper date. This is called tradition. Now get going before you are late."
"Pushy," I said but smiled.
Valencia opened the door and looked at me intently.
"You clean up nice Mr. Jacob," she commented.
"A compliment from my ol' gal Val, I must be dreaming," I smirked when she looked annoyed.
Lily came downstairs wearing a backless red skater dress and I had the urge to pick her up in my arms as she looked ridiculously sexy.
"Wow! Are you trying to seduce me?" I said ignoring Valencia's glare.
"You better behave, Mr. Jacob," she said and I winked.
Lily giggled. "Me? Look at you! You look great Jacob!" she beamed.
I gave her a quick kiss. "So, Sarah and Darren will be here soon. He is taking her since she didn't have a date. That was nice of him right?" she asked.
Sure, nice of him. I knew it was just a ploy to get close to Lily. He was just using Sarah. But I couldn't say that to Lily.
Pretty soon Darren walked in with Sarah with a smug look on his face. He went straight to Lily and hugged her while I tried to control my anger. His hand lingered a little too long on her back.
I will get you back for this one day, I thought.
We finally arrived at school and people were staring at us. I knew it was because of me since people still weren't used to me having a girlfriend, especially when it was Lily.
Lily and I danced for a few minutes and I found myself starting to have fun. Maybe this wasn't a bad idea after all.
"Mind if I cut in?" someone spoke next to us all of a sudden, it was Darren.
As a matter of fact, I do mind. But I couldn't be rude in front of her so I let him.
"I am gonna go grab some punch," I said and stood by the snacks table so I could keep a close eye on the douche bag.
I couldn't hear what he was saying to her but it looked like he said something funny which made her laugh. And then all of a sudden, her face turned serious. I wondered what kind of poison he was pouring inside her ears. I needed to put a stop to it.
"Mind if I take my girlfriend back now?" I said in a serious tone.
"Sure sure, I am gonna go dance with my date," he said and left us.
"What was he telling you up here?" I asked when he was out of sight.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"I saw your face turn all serious. What were you talking about?" I persisted.
"It was nothing really, we were just talking about my old school," she said. I could tell she wasn't telling me the whole truth but I didn't press any further.
After the dance was over, Sarah invited us to her house. She said we could all hang out there since her parents were out of town. I couldn't pass on the opportunity of being alone with Lily so I jumped on the idea. Lily hesitated.
"I don't know...I promised dad I will be home early," she said.
"Come on Lil! Live a little," Sarah said.
"I'll have to agree with Sarah on this one," I said.
Lily nodded. "Okay, just for a little while," she said and that's how we ended up at Sarah's house and that's when everything went wrong.
