Chapter 20: NOTORIOUS HEART-BREAKER
Read online · About 5 minutesDeandra listened more to her friend Kylie as they sat in front of each other inside the mini-forest. She could see that her friend is more lively this time compared from the last time they met. She could see that her friend Kylie, getting used to the life of being pregnant.
"I am honestly excited of what's in store for you and your baby." Deandra told her as she held both of Kylie's hands.
"Me too. I felt like having second hopes again. Thank you so much my dearest Deandra. I will never forget what help you did for me."
"That's what friends are for, right? I just did what I think I have to do." She smiled at her best friend as she hugged her once again.
"How are you? Are you still working in the restaurant?"
"Well, I have to do it, dear. You know me."
"If you need help, please do not hesitate to let me know. Anyway, I came here to give you my new address. I will not be having my boarding house again, several blocks away from your house."
"Oh, why?"
"My boyfriend's parents wanted me to live in their house so that their future grandson or granddaughter will surely be taken care of."
"Wow, I can say you're indeed lucky, my dear. Your parents-in-law loves you so much."
"At least they are not becoming like their son. They knew how to be responsible."
"I hope your baby will grow to be a good person just like you dear."
"Thank you so much dear Deandra."
She talked more and Deandra also attended her classes. Afternoon came and it was 5:00 PM already. Deandra entered the library with a gloomy mood. She saw Mrs. Seo, their librarian as she approached her.
"Oh, hello there Deandra! I want you to arrange the bookshelf on aisles 9 and 10 please. The books there were disheveled."
"Yes, ma'am." She nodded as she felt a jolt of relief. At least she will not see Andrew for the meantime...although he missed him already.
She went towards the designated aisle that the librarian wants her to arrange. She started to put the books in order not minding the people around her. After a few minutes, she heard a familiar voice coming towards where she's at right now.
"That was an awesome dream, dude." Was that Andrew? Although their voice is not that loud, she could hear what they are talking about.
"I thought you too already broke up?" His friend answered him.
"Yes, but l am not giving up on her. She's the one I love so much. I will do everything for her, dude."
Deandra looked at the many books around her as tears flowed from her eyes. She can't even believe what she just heard. What? A dream? Is it really possible for that night to be considered just a dream?
No matter how she disregarded what he heard, it still broke her heart. She realized he never remembered her, even her face, and what she did for him when he became so wasted that night. He was too drunk to even remember her, even a little and it is hurting her too much right now.
Even if he's too drunk, I hope he somehow remembered her while he is recklessly taking her. All the things that happened that night. Even if he doesn't remember her, every single thing that happened that night is still fresh from her memory.
They left and Deandra just stayed there, arranging the books slowly. It's as if all of her strength left her all of a sudden after what she heard from Andrew. The man she is starting to love. She decided to be absent from her last night job in the restaurant. She packed all of her heavy backpack and got on the bus all the way to her house.
"I'm home," She dryly greeted everyone as she opened the door. All the four of them looked at her in shock. They're all speechless as if they have seen a ghost just now.
"What?"
"Dear Deandra, I thought you're still working?"
"Do you have any fried chicken?" Dee, Dina and Dahlia said these to me in order, and I love the last sentence. I can't help but chuckle as I tapped the hair of Dahlia.
"Are you okay?" Mom asked me as I went near the table. I smiled when I saw my favorite dish: fried fish and stewed cabbages with carrots. I sat right away and grabbed a bowl of rice and dishes. They all giggled when they saw how hungry I am.
"Dear Deandra, you're fat now." Dahlia said that Dina covered her mouth right away.
"I know. But I am the kindest, fat girl you'll ever love, right?" I cheerfully answered and made all of them laugh.
"You're beautiful my dear. Don't mind the physical appearance for it will easily fade away. Mind what's inside of your heart." I nodded as I ate more. They're having their dinner that's why Deandra was so happy as she went home.
After her three sisters went to bed, her mom went near her as she sat on the chair of their dining table drinking a glass of milk.
"Do you have something to tell me?" She touched her hair as she gave her a worried look.
"What should I tell you?" She looked up and gave her a weak smile.
"Well, I am your mom and it is not always normal that you come home early from work. Let me see," She sat next to her as she felt her forehead and neck using her hands.
"Hmm, you're not sick, either. What's the problem dear? Do you need anything, perhaps?"
"No, mom. I am okay. I guess I felt worn out a little, that's why I decided to come home earlier than usual." She nodded as if getting convinced of what Deandra is telling her.
"Okay, but are you sure you're really alright?" Her mom stood up and cupped her cheeks. She smiled and touched both of her mother's hands.
"Yep. I am as okay as an ox. Don't worry mom." Her mother tapped her head and excused herself to go to her room now. Deandra nodded and she also got ready to bed. She did her usual night routine, doing the half-bath, putting on her pajamas and lying down next to Dahlia who is showing her weird sleeping position again. Deandra carried her and put her again to bed, this time, Dahlia's head was on the pillow now, while her feet were on the lower part of the bed.
Deandra looked at her youngest sister. This time, how she wished to become a child again. No stress, no tiresome activities and jobs and especially no heartbreaks.
