Chapter 15: LIFESAVER
Read online · About 6 minutesDeandra's POV
I am used to Andrew's presence everyday. Especially that he loves going to the library to study a lot. There are times that he would stay there for almost the whole day. Of course, we can't help but to also share random topics to talk about. I have discovered that we also shared some little things in common. That made me become interested in knowing him more.
He is also nice and approachable. I can't help but like his personality a lot. He is silent most of the time but if we will start a topic, he loves to share what's in his mind. He's smart and he loves to share what he knows about, especially about laws and other questions that I am asking him.
"I think Dahlia is the cutest among all of your siblings."
"Why?" I can't help but to smile. Whenever someone will tell me about my sister, it's like complimenting me directly as well. I was able to show him some pictures of them in my wallet. That's why he could say these things.
"She's really sweet and kind. The twins are also adorable but I know twins share distinct characteristics, right?" He sounded sure that I just nodded as an indirect answer while smiling at him.
"Do you have siblings, too?" I asked. He just shook his head as he looked at me. He always smiles at me that I can't help but to avoid my gaze by looking at the other direction. If this is a staring contest, I will surely lose the game because his gaze is too powerful. Even his mere presence longs to melt all of me.
"Wow, I think you're too lucky because you're the only one."
"Nope. Not really. Why did you say that?"
"I don't know. I guess I just assume that your parents never experienced stress more than I do."
"There are things you never knew about. It's not what you think it is."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Yes, I am their only child but they love their businesses more than me. Got used to it all these years doing most of the things by myself."
"Oh, I am so sorry to hear that."
"You know what's even more ironic?" He smiled but I could sense a melancholic vibe as I gaze into his eyes a little.
"I am closer to my nanny more than my mom. That's the sad truth." He added. I couldn't help but to swallow. Yeah, I instantly regret telling him about that. I guess, not all families work the way I imagine. I guess I am used to seeing parents having a strong relationship with their only daughter or son.
"We all have our own struggles. At least you never had problems when it comes to financial stuff."
He just sighed as he smiled at me. However, I can see that he never wanted to talk more about it. Indeed, we face different situations with different reasons why things happen.
"Thank you for this. I admire people whom I can talk with comfortably."
"I never mind. Thank you also for listening. Most people never wanted to talk to me."
"Why? I think you have a nice personality. It's just that some people can't appreciate it."
"Thank you for the compliment. I am happy that someone is making me feel that life is good."
"Life is always better. It's just that people view life on a different point of view. Reading books could make you learn more about life and on how to manage it efficiently."
"Thank you. I will always remember this one." I smiled as I stood up. I glanced at my wristwatch and saw Kelly winked at me at a corner. I blushed as I smiled back at her. She gave me a gesture that she'll take my turn in attending to the students who leave and get their library cards from my post on the mini-table three meters away from the table where I am sitting with Andrew.
"Sorry but I have to go now. I will still have my last part-time job for tonight at exactly 7:20 PM." He nodded and smiled at me. He shifted his gaze to the books that he is reading. I walked towards the mini-table where student assistants are sitting. Kelly flashed a malicious smile that I poked her on the arm.
"I will go now. Bye Keir!" I greeted her as I passed by the mini-table. She nodded and waved her hand, too.
I went out of school with an enthusiastic smile. I am not beautiful or sexy but I feel like one because of Andrew's attention. I can't even believe that we will talk more about ourselves. Well, whatever that attention is, I liked it so much. Even if it is a friendly gesture, he still made me happy that I am so inspired in whatever work that I will do for the rest of the night.
Two hours of going to and fro made me feel light. I usually feel dead tired but tonight is a different one. Whenever I remember Andrew's smile, I feel energized. Maybe my classmates are all right. If you feel inspired, nothing can ever make you feel down. I put off our restaurant uniform and apron and folded it as I put it inside my bag. I changed to our school uniform because it's more decent. I have a round, collar neck blouse and baby blue slacks.
I walked alone since Kylie's stomach is getting bigger and obvious. She needs to have her bed rest as often as possible so that both her and the baby will not be stressed.
When I tried to pass on the main road on our way to our house, I noticed there were two drunkards walking criss-cross between the road. I heard a lot of dogs barking at them but they seem to not care.
My heart started to race fast when they saw me walking beside the road two meters away from them. I am all alone and the two men have bigger, stronger bodies. I looked around and I noticed that there's nobody passing by this road because it's already late.
I heard a certain cat-calling sound from one of them as he smiled at me. I became really nervous when his saliva started to drool from his mouth as he smiled at me.
"Hey miss beautiful...how are you?" One of them greeted me as they put their arms to both their shoulders side by side, as if supporting each other not to fall down. I did not answer and I started walking faster than the usual.
"Hey, we're not done talking yet baby, why such in a hurry?" One of them grabbed my shoulders and the other one stood in front of me. I shrieked in pain because of what the other man did to me. They were all grinning and laughing like crazy.
"I will go home now. Let me go!" I tried twitching but they tightened their grip on me. I noticed that they are both holding me now. What can I do? They are stronger than me.
"Stay for a while. I am sure you'll enjoy what we are going to do with you." The other man laughed after what he heard from his companion. His laugh is really creepy that I noticed the tears that's falling on my cheeks.
"No! I will not go with you!" I tried resisting but they were stronger than me. They both held my left and right arm. My heart almost stopped when I heard a gunshot.
"Let her go!" Someone shouted from behind us. How can I not know that voice?
