Chapter 36
Read online · About 10 minutesDo you ever wonder why life has to smack you on the side of the head right when something is finally going right in your life? I mean it's like the world just doesn't want you to be happy. But besides that I guess I should get back to what was currently going on...
“Well this is an interesting sight." We both froze at the very familiar voice. Shit.
“Jax uh hey man,” Nick said getting off me and standing up awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. I sat up but didn't bother standing up. What? I'm lazy. Kill me if it's a crime.
“I would think you were just using Claire as a cover story to hide that you're gay, but based on the giggle and girls voice I heard my guess is that he is actually a she."
“I'm curious though why would a girl come to an all-boys school. Maybe Caiden is right. It seems as though you're a whore. Hm I wonder who all knows about this,” Jax said tapping his chin with his index finger, before a smirk crawled its way up on his face.
“Uh, what the hell are you talking about?" I asked in my guy voice keeping the act up.
“Drop the act Claire,” he said rolling his eyes,” Now I wonder how much trouble you both can get in. I mean Nick you really thought it was a good idea to keep this a secret? Girlfriend or not you can get kicked out of here for this,” he said making a tsk noise.
“What do you want?" Nick said glaring at him before putting out a hand pulling me up.
“I won't tell your dirty little secret if you two break up with each other,” he said and I didn't bother to suppress my laugh.
“Please explain this to me. Why does the world have a problem with me being with Nick?"
“You made the player into a one woman type of man. It isn't normal,” Jax said, but I knew he was lying based on the evil glint in his eyes.
“That's a shitty reason,” Nick hissed.
“I don't care if I get in trouble I honestly don't need this school. I'm staying with Nick,” I said stubbornly. My dad flashed through my head and I bit my lip not knowing what to do about that situation.
“Well let's go talk to the dean. I'm sure Caiden's dad would love to properly meet you,” my mind went blank not knowing what to say. Caiden's dad?
“What do you mean Caiden's dad?" I asked slowly.
“Caiden's dad is the dean here and his mom is the headmistress and the school next store,” I felt completely and utterly stupid. How could I not notice the similarities? Although I've never talked to the dean here I should have realized the similarities with eye and hair color. Oh and their lovely personalities.
“Jax must you do this? I want to know the real reason,” Nick said wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me closer,” I don't care for your shitty excuse."
“Can you at least hear me out first before you blackmail me?" I pleaded,” In all fairness I don't really give a shit,” he said shrugging. That mother fuc-
“But I'm curious and I have time,” Jax said taking a seat on the grass and leaning back. He looked up at the blue sky closing his eyes. “I'm waiting,” he said raising his eyebrow. I let out a sigh quickly explaining the whole reason why I was here. It only took about 10 minutes after answering all of his questions. He decided to try to end the conversation with,
“You're stupid as fuck."
“Excuse me?"
“You're trying to find out if you're dad's cheating, I get it, but holding off on your career for this is just plain stupid,” my eyes narrowed at him as he stood up wiping off his black jeans.
“I'm not holding off on my career. I'm taking a business management class,” I said defensively.
“You know what why don't we just hold off on telling the parents let's tell the son first,” Jax said suddenly. "Caiden.” He looked up and slowly made his way toward us with a blank face.
“What?"
“I have some information that you may just found interesting,” he started, putting his hand on Caiden's shoulder which was quickly shrugged off.
“Claire just broke up with Nick and he really needs a best friend right now. “The words were forced out of my mouth bitterly. I couldn't stand to look at Nick's face. I knew if I looked at his face I would probably burst out into tears and I'm usually not one to cry. Right after that I walked away and headed toward the dorms. It seemed that was my only option. I was almost positive that if Caiden found out he would tell his parents or he would also blackmail me. Why does being a boy/girl suck so much? Wait that came out wrong . . .
“Jason!" Eddie yelled out making me pause. I almost wanted to just scream right then. Have you ever just wanted to lay in your bed and sleep away all the pain you feel in your heart? That's how I felt right now.
“Hey Eddie. I haven't seen you in a while. What's up?" I asked plastering a fake smile on my face.
“Nothing much. Do you want to maybe get some lunch?" He asked me and an apologetic, sad smile appeared on my face.
“I'm not feeling that great Eddie. Rain check?" I asked and he nodded not looking effected at all.
“Yea, sure. Feel better!" He said smiling before waving and walking away. I still couldn't believe that everyone is so harsh to him. Seriously he is the sweetest.
------------
“All by myself,” I sang loudly with an agonizing voice. I was all by myself and so I was watching one of Brendon Urie's vine on repeat. Okay we all already know I have issues. I mean for heaven's sake I talk to myself.
“Shut the hell up," Someone yelled knocking on my door before I heard their footsteps heading away from my door. “How about next time you don't walk past my door!" I yell back throwing my popcorn toward the door. If it wasn't obvious I was in a bad mood. I immediately closed my mouth when I heard two new voices outside the door.
"Yea man you know what they say hoes before bros,” Nick replied patting Caiden on the back and Caiden just stared blankly at him as they walked in.
"You mean bros before hoes?" Caiden questioned and Nick frowned.
"What?" He responded confused.
"The saying is, bros before hoes,” Caiden said shaking his head at him and shutting the door.
"Really?" Nick asked and Caiden nodded his head.
"Oh well then you know what they say man bros before hoes,” Nick said and Caiden just shook his head.
"You're an idiot,” Nick's eyes landed on my figure laying on my bed and stared almost longingly at me. I was sure I was staring at him almost the same exact way.
“What the fuck are you doing here and why is there popcorn everywhere?" Caiden hissed glaring at me.
“This is my dorm too,” I retorted rolling my eyes focusing my eyes now on the TV where The Phantom of The Opera was playing.
“You're so fucking girly and I thought you finally moved out,” he said shutting off the TV at the part where Christine started to sing Think Of Me.
“I was watching that!" I hissed throwing a pillow at him. Seeing that part of Caiden made my fear of him completely go away.
“Who the fuck do you think you are? You are a peasant in my eyes. Stop acting like you're higher than me," Caiden hissed, picking up my petite body by the collar of my shirt. Okay I lied I'm scared shitless.
“Caiden, just leave him alone," Nick muttered grabbing a Dr. Pepper out of Caiden's mini fridge. Caiden threw me back on my bed before grabbing a change of clothes and heading toward the bathroom. The second the door shut Nick was talking to me.
“So are we seriously going to let Jax get in between us?" Nick asked keeping his distance and talking in a hushed voice.
“What choice do we have?! Nick, I was here to find out about my dad. No, was I still am here to find out about him. Maybe after that is all figured out we can try again without anyone getting between us,” I say softly walking over to him and grabbing his hand.
“If that's what you want then fine,” he says pulling his hand out of mine.
“I just have to do one more thing,” he put his hand on the back of my neck and pulled me in for a kiss. It only lasted a few seconds before we both pulled away.
"I'll definitely miss that,” I murmured, sitting back down on my bed. Caiden exited the bathroom dressed in a nice buttoned up dark blue shirt and black jeans.
“You ready?" Caiden asked grabbing his car keys from his table by his bed.
“Yea, let's go."
“Where are you going?" I blurted out without thinking.
“Out,” Caiden hissed at the same time Nick responded with, "Drinking."
“Oh have fun with that,” I murmured turning the TV back on. As the door shut behind them I knew for a fact in that moment I was officially single again.
“Open this door this instant Martez." A familiar voice hissed about a half an hour later making my heart jump a little. Walking over to the door, being careful to not step on popcorn.
Click.
I unlocked the door and opened it slowly to see Nathan there,” Nate?"
“What did I just over hear in the elevator?" He demanded shutting the door behind him with his foot.
"It's rude to eavesdrop,” I muttered grabbing a red Gatorade from my own fridge.
“Claire,” he said in a warning tone and I bit my lip finally making eye contact with him.
"Okay Nick and I broke up. Now stop saying my name so loud. Someone may overhear you,” I responded plopping back down on my bed and pausing my movie.
I'm sorry Phantom you always seem to get ignored.
You're talking to a TV. You really are a freak.
Don't hate. I pretended to wipe off fake dust off my shoulders making Nathan role his eyes as he sat down on the end of my bed.
“How are you dealing with it?" He asked me gently.
“It's only been a couple of hours and I haven't broken down crying. So I'm still staying not strong,” I say holding up a fisted hand, Success.
“You aren't one to cry though. Especially over a breakup,” he had a point there.
“I mean do you see yourself having a future with him?" I kept quiet for a moment, thinking about it. The whole time we've been together I never once thought about the future, I always thought about the present when we were together. It's been a couple of months now and everything been perfect I guess I could have had a perfect life with him in the future.
But you don't want a perfect life.
In a way that was true. My life isn't perfect. I'm dressed as a guy in a male university. I wouldn't call that a normal or perfect life. But in reality what is the definition of normal? How would I know if I was fitting the normal category anyways?
“No, I don't think I could see a future with him, yet, I still had plenty of time to figure that out,” I told him licking my dry lips. “Hey Nathan I have a question for you,” I say suddenly as I lay my head in his lap.
“Ask away."
“What is the definition of normal?"
“Hm, I guess it means to fit into society standard and expectations or to something that's just expected of you,” Nathan said a minute later and I nodded.
“I'm not normal,” I say looking up at him and he looked down at me and ended up bursting out in laughter.
"What?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
“It's strange to see you as a brunette with your head down in my lap. And Claire, please tell me something I don't know. I've known you were normal since the day we met,” making me smile up at him. Not fitting into society's expectations seemed like a perfect life for me.
