Chapter 20
Read online · About 4 minutesChristopher literally rushed out of the shower to answer his phone. He was half-naked; He only had his towel tied below his torso.
“This phone call should better be important, woman. I literally ran out of the bathroom to answer your call since you were calling non-stop.”
Susan giggled on the other side. “Sorry Bro, I just wanted to know how the check-up went.”
“Well, at first I was angry when I got to the hospital.”
“Why?” Susan asked.
“Vivian told me the appointment was for nine when it was for Eleven.”
Susan chuckled before she replied. “That is so Vivian.”
“I was really mad at her. I had to shift some of my meetings only for me to get there and spend two hours waiting.”
“But I guess it was all worth it right?” She asked.
“It definitely was!” Chris replied and Susan could picture her brother smiling in the process.
“He or she is still tiny but I love it already. We heard the heartbeat and it was the most amazing sound I’ve ever heard. I’m so happy the baby is healthy.”
“Wow, you sound so in love with the way you speak about this little bean. I can’t wait to meet him or her too. Your baby will get gifts from me everyday.”
Chris chuckled, “You are allowed to spoil my child but not too much okay?”
Susan laughed out loud “I swear you’re behaving like Dad right now.”
“Am I?” Chris frowned.
“Yes, you’re bro! Your fatherly instincts are already kicking in.”
“Well maybe, but I’m going to be a cool dad. Someone much more different than our Dad and my child’s happiness will always come first.”
“You know you shouldn’t blame Mom and Dad right? They think they are doing all of these in your best interest. Besides they don’t know about Naomi and they are just caged with the idea that Vivian is the one for you and with this baby on the way, they think it’s a sign from God that you two should be together.”
Christopher sighed. “Telling our parents about Naomi will only complicate things especially now that Naomi and I are over. Mom keeps saying I will fall in love with Vivian when we become couples and honestly I doubt it because no one can ever take Naomi’s place in my heart.”
“The reason why I’m agreeing to marry Vivian is because of our child and nothing more. I’ve told her not to expect much from me when we get married.”
“How did she take the news?” Susan asked.
“She was in tears and she even apologized to me.”
“She did what??????” Susan screamed loud enough that her brother had to take his phone away from his ear for a while.
Chris chuckled, “I know right, I was surprised too. But it was real; She said she was sorry for everything and she wants me to give her and the baby a chance.”
“I told her I don’t feel the same way about her and that I love someone else.”
“Poor Vivian, She did all these out of desperation. I now feel sorry for her.”
“The doctor noticed our distance throughout the checkup and begged me to be there for her. She said every woman needs to be loved when they are pregnant to avoid hurting themselves and the baby.”
“Just do your best bro, be there for her as much as you can. I believe everything will be fine.”
“I hope so. When I heard the baby’s heartbeat, I sort of wished Naomi was the one carrying my child. We would have been happy together. I may be with Vivian but my heart will always be with Naomi.”
“Poor you, Christopher. So now that you’re turning up for the wedding, should I plan a bachelor party for you? We can have one tomorrow evening before the wedding on Saturday. Wait, have you bought your wedding suit?”
“No need for any Bachelor’s party Buba, I would rather spend the night sleeping and dreaming of how miserable my life will be after the wedding. I’ll just look for a suit to wear in my closet and I’ve asked Andre to be my best man so I guess I’m ready to get married.”
Susan was speechless, it was times like this she wished she had some sort of magical powers. Her brother deserved to be happy, his wedding day was supposed to be the best day of his life but now it was actually the other way round for him, marrying someone he doesn’t love for the sake of his child.
“Yes, you are. I didn’t go shopping too so I’ll just search my closet for a dress to wear.”
“I thought Vivian asked you to be her bridesmaid?” He said
“Yes she did but I sort of quit because she was becoming too demanding. It’s her wedding so she wanted everything to be done in her own way. Besides, you know I never really get along with her.”
“Wow, okay then, we’ll talk tomorrow right?”
“Sure bro, goodnight”
“Night Muffin.” He said and then ended the call.
Christopher made his way to his closet and reached for his usual sweatpants and shirt.
He made himself comfortable on his bed, he decided to do some work so he reached for his laptop on his nightstand.
Halfway through, he began thinking about Naomi. He took his cell phone that was beside him and dialled her number. He knew the number wasn’t going to be reachable but he dialled it anyways and it went straight to voicemail.
Chris knew he left her broken and he would never forgive himself for that but still, He wanted to know how she was doing.
