Chapter 19

Read online · About 11 minutes

Christopher was happy when he walked out of his building and saw that the entrance was press free. Perhaps they had given up on him which was perfect.

He placed his briefcase in the backseat before settling into the driver’s seat and drove towards his family hospital. Vivian made all her appointments in Trinity Hospital when she discovered she was pregnant with the heir to the Smiths empire as it made sense to give birth to him or her in the same hospital Christopher was born in.

Even though Christopher was scared of hospitals, he had a different feeling about this visit and he unexpectedly found himself excited about hearing from the doctor on how his baby was doing. He made up his mind to be there for him or her. The poor little thing should not be held responsible for his or her mother’s actions.

He walked into the hospital and approached a nurse who was at the receptionist area.

“Good morning!” He greeted politely.

“Good morning.” The nurse replied looking up from her computer, her smile widened as soon as she took in who was standing in front of her. The most handsome bachelor in the state. Well, he was going to be married soon so the bachelor title was almost gone.

“How can I help you, sir?” She asked politely.

“I’m to accompany someone for a check-up. Please, can you confirm if there is an appointment for Vivian Matthews?”

“Okay.” She replied and typed a couple of things on her computer.

“Yes, she has an appointment with Doctor Williams on the third floor but the appointment is at eleven. You can go wait in the reception over there if you want.” She offered.

Christopher ran his fingers through his hair before heaving a sigh. Vivian told him the appointment was for 9:30. It was just 9:23 what the hell was he going to do until 11 am?

“Thank you!” He said to the nurse. Before he could turn around, he heard her say “Congratulations in advance on your wedding!”

Chris stood still, he was definitely not expecting her to say what she said and he wasn’t sure how to react. He finally turned to the nurse with a sad smile on his face and replied her with a nod before making his way to the elevator. ‘If only She knew what he was going through, She wouldn't be congratulating him.’

Chris stepped out of the elevator when it reached the third floor, he proceeded to the waiting area and took a seat on a deep blue couch. He reached for his phone in his pocket and dialled Vivian but she did not pick up his call.

He tried calling her again and again and he got no answer. He should have known better, Vivian was never on time to events or appointments. But what annoyed him more was the fact that she wasn’t truthful about the exact time for the appointment.

Chris did a few breathing exercises to calm his temper and began to work on his phone by going through some pending emails and replying to them. He was so engrossed in what he was doing that he failed to notice how fast time went by.

He did not even notice when Vivian walked out of the elevator and took a seat beside him. It was when she placed her left arm over his right arm that he noticed her presence.

As soon as her arm came in contact with his, he quickly released himself from her touch, he turned to her and gave her a spiteful glare.

“Really Vivian? The appointment was set for 11 and you told me it was set for 9 in the morning!” He said, trying to control his anger because there were four other people in the waiting area and he didn’t want to create unnecessary attention.

“I wasn’t sure if you were going to show up that was why I told you it was a 9 am appointment.” She justified and he shook his head in disbelief.

“Don’t blame me okay! If you had been civil with me before now all these would not have happened.”

“Don’t tell me that crap Vivian because you are responsible for everything we are both going through.”

“I replied to your text that I was going to be here. I even called you and you did not pick up your calls. I had to cancel two meetings to be here this morning, woman!”

She shrugged without a care in the world “I’m sure your clients will understand.”

Chris sighed and buried his face in his hands. He couldn’t believe this was the person he was going to get married to in less than forty-eight hours. How the hell would he cope with her? Even her presence makes him sick.

“Miss Vivian, Mr Smith, Doctor Williams is ready to see you.” A blonde-haired nurse announced to them.

Chris waited for Vivian to stand to her feet before he stood up. The nurse guided them to Doctor Williams who was in the examination room.

They walked in while she was setting up the ultrasound machine.

“Good morning!” She smiled at them as soon as they walked in.

Doctor Williams was a female doctor in her late forties.

“Good morning.” Vivian and Chris replied at the same time.

She walked towards them, shook their hands and introduced herself “I’m Doctor Williams and I’m in charge of your medical welfare till your baby arrives.”

“Please have a seat.” She said to Chris, pointing to a chair that was beside the ultrasound bed.

Williams made Vivian sit on the ultrasound bed and had a one-on-one conversation with her. Even though she was focused on Vivian, She kind of involved Chris in the conversation.

“How are you?” She asked Vivian.

“Fine, I guess.”

“Have you noticed anything weird, like any pain or morning sickness?”

“Not really but I do feel nauseous and I react badly to the smell of fish and meat.”

“Any weird cravings?”

“Just at midnight. Sometimes I feel like taking pickles and other times I would feel like Ice cream.

“Which flavour?”

“Strawberry,” Vivian replied and doctor Williams nodded as she scribbled something on her chart.

“I know there are times you will feel like eating sweet things but it’s also important to eat healthy food for the sake of the baby; So it will be good if you can balance both.”

She turned to Chris and told him specifically. “I will give you a meal plan and you must ensure she follows it.” Chris glanced at Vivian who had a smile playing on her lips, he looked back at Doctor Williams and nodded reluctantly.

He was angry but he tried not to show it. He was tired of seeing Vivian winning, She was always getting what she wanted. It was as if luck and the whole world was on her side and that was making him mad.

Doctor Williams led Vivian to the scale to weigh herself, took her blood pressure and made her lie on the ultrasound bed. She rolled Vivian’s shirt up a little to apply some gel. Chris noticed her belly was still as flat as he could remember.

“It’s going to be very cold!” Doctor Williams warned before properly applying the gel.

She moved the wand around Vivian’s abdomen before focusing on a spot and then she pointed to the monitor. “Here’s your little one!”

“It’s so tiny,” Christopher whispered.

“Yes it is, but this Jelly Bean will grow big in no time.” Doctor Williams replied a curious Christopher before pressing something on the monitor and a healthy heartbeat overtook the room.

The sound was unexplainable that it made tears of joy build up in Christopher’s eyes. Everything seemed real to him, his baby was healthy and that was what mattered. He then promised himself that he was going to do anything for the sake of this baby even though it involved putting up with Vivian.

Vivian, on the other hand, was speechless, She had tears in her eyes. She wanted to intertwine her hand with Chris’ own but she was scared of him rejecting her.

Doctor Williams gave the soon to be parents some time to get used to their baby’s heartbeat as she went ahead to print some ultrasound pictures.

She placed them in a brown envelope and handed them to Christopher. “I printed 7 copies, I hope it would suffice.”

“That should be enough Doctor Williams, Thank you!” He said and then collected the envelope from her.

Doctor Williams wiped the gel on Vivian’s belly.

“You have to be very careful from now on; follow the meal plan and please avoid stress as much as you can. By my calculation you’re still in your first trimester; exactly two months pregnant. Please do all I’ve instructed so we will welcome a healthy baby in seven months.” She said to Vivian who nodded.

“Can I use the restroom?” Vivian asked shyly. Since she got pregnant she had been visiting the restroom very often.

Williams smiled at her “You don’t have to be shy about it dear. It’s one of the symptoms of you carrying a little human in you. When you step out of this room, go by your right, you will see the ladies restroom.

“Thanks!” Vivian replied and made her way out of the room.

Doctor Williams intentionally waited for Vivian to exit the room before she spoke.

“Mr Smith, I don’t know what is going on between you two but please be there for your child and its mother.”

Since they stepped into the ultrasound room, she noticed the distance between them, hearing the baby’s heartbeat and seeing the baby on the monitor for the first time was what parents looked forward to and the reaction she saw was not what she was expecting. She could tell they were both excited but they expressed their excitement individually.

“When a woman is pregnant, she yarns to be loved, to be spoilt, to be treated like a princess. So please be there for her so she won’t unintentionally harm herself and the baby and also be patient with her because of her mood swings." Chris nodded reluctantly.

“I’ll do my best, Doc.” He assured.

Vivian returned from the restroom and occupied the seat next to Chris. Doctor Williams handed her a meal plan and a piece of paper that contained her prescription.

“Congratulations to you two. I will be expecting you in three weeks.”

“Thank you”

“Thanks, Doc.” Vivian and Chris replied respectively as they stood to their feet.

From the ultrasound room, Chris and Vivian made their way to the pharmacy section of the hospital where they bought the prescriptions Doctor Williams gave. Christopher paid for the medications and they made their way out of the hospital.

Christopher was walking in front and Vivian was like five steps behind him.

“Chris!!!” He stopped in his tracks when he heard her call his name. She walked up to him and fiddled with the plastic bag she was holding. The plastic bag contained the medicines they just purchased.

“Can I talk to you for a moment? In my Car?” She asked nervously and he nodded, gesturing for her to lead the way.

Vivian led the way to her black Lambogini, made her way to the driver’s seat while Chris settled in the front passenger’s seat.

She placed the plastic bag in her passenger seat, removed three ultrasound pictures from the envelope and handed Chris the remaining four copies.

Christopher accepted the envelope and gave her a questioning look, he was sure as hell that this could not be the reason she requested to talk to him in her car.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered.

Christopher’s eyes went wide, he thought he heard wrong at first. The Vivian he knew was a proud fellow who would never apologize even though she was the one at fault.

“You’re sorry?” He mocked and she nodded slowly.

For the first time since they entered her car, she raised her head to look at him and said those words again. “I’m sorry.”

Christopher chuckled, “Sorry for what exactly? Sorry for raping me, sorry for trapping me with our child or sorry for insisting we get married because you wouldn’t want the baby to be born out of wedlock?”

“I’m sorry for everything.” She said. For once Christopher thought he saw something like sincerity in her eyes. He couldn’t believe she was trying to be the good one and now make him feel like the bad guy here.

“I don’t understand. What is making you say all of these?” He asked, his eyes not leaving hers. Her eyes became teary, she swallowed painfully and then spoke.

“I guess seeing our baby and hearing its heartbeat made me realize how selfish I’ve been.” A tear rolled down her cheeks, she reached for a tissue in a box that was beside her and gently wiped the tears, careful enough not to ruin her makeup.

“I like you very much Chris and I want you to like me too. Please just give me a chance, I need you and our baby needs you too.” She sniffed.

“That will be hard Vivian because I’m sure you know I don’t feel anything for you. I’m in love with someone else and I don’t think we can work when it comes to having a relationship, I just want us to be good parents to our child. He or she is the only reason I’m agreeing to this marriage because, after all that had happened between Naomi and me, I think it’s this baby that is keeping me sane.”

“I’ll try to fulfil my duties as your husband but please do not expect much from me. I’m just a call away if you need anything and if not see you at the altar.”

Christopher did not give her the chance to respond. He helped himself down from the car.

The tears Vivian was holding flowed freely, she sobbed like a baby. She cried and cried until there were no more tears left.
