“The next thing we knew was that the son of the finance minister, the one who was supposed to marry Urmi in two moths was found dead, lying in his pool of blood after being killed. This devastated both families, especially my sister. She mourned him for days, she was in love with him and she didn’t know how to live without him”

Desire gasped out loudly at the story. She felt so sad for Urmi. She couldn’t imagine any woman to feel that way, ever. No one deserves to lose a special person.

“The king sent his condolences and the next day, he sent his proposal again. That was when it became clear that the King had killed that innocent man. So, before we could stop her, my sister, Urmi sent a message to the King through the messenger he sent. She said some wrong words to him, disgracing his royal status. We all knew what she said was wrong but no one could blame her. She was still grieving and yet, the king had the heart to send a proposal”

Sylvester snickered before he continued the story.

“This in turn angered the king and summoned up his determination at marrying my sister by force. Then he sent the messenger back to tell us that we all should prepare for his arrival in three days time as he’ll be coming for his bride. We all lost our minds, my father was angry, my sisters sad while Ying and I could only think of ways to keep our family safe.

We waited for his arrival and on the third day, the king was nowhere in sight. My father decided to set out on his own to see if the king had laid an ambush or made a plan to destroy us while we lay waiting for him. The sunset and my father didn’t return. By morning, the knights I sent out to look for him came back with his corpse. Angrily, I set out with Ying to the palace to call the king out for the damages he had done. I was on the way when a messenger came in with the news that my sister, Urmi had committed suicide right before we left”

“My lord,” Desire rose from the water and turned to face him. Her eyes were filled with tears as she stared into his eyes. She could see that he was struggling to tell the story. “I was shattered. I didn’t go back home to bury my sister and my father, instead I went to the palace with a determination at beheading him but then to my own shock, I saw my sister, Naomi already in a bridal robe, waiting with the king in his palace. I lost my stance, I couldn’t speak.

Once I regained my senses, I tried dragging her out of the palace but to my own surprise, Naomi pushed me away and she told me to my face that she had always wanted to be Queen. She had the right to tell it to my face that she had been eyeing the king for a while and now that she had that opportunity, she decided to take it.

I told her that from that moment onward she was dead to me, she will never be my sister anymore. All she’ll be to me is a Queen and told her to forget that she has a brother somewhere outside the palace”

Trying to calm him down, Desire asked a different question, “Even though you went through all these in the hands of the king, why did you still became the prime minister, why did you accept the role?”

“It’s a duty to my people, Desire, not to the king or to the throne” He replied. Desire kissed his forehead as she felt really proud of him.

“I don’t believe what Queen Naomi said, I think there’s more to the story”

“Why will there be more to the story? She betrayed her own family, she deserves to be banished or flogged at the public square….” Desire felt his shoulder tense, she knew he was mad at his sister or maybe it was at the situation.
