White Nights

Fyodor Dostoevsky

NovellaEnglish

A lonely dreamer wanders Petersburg and meets Nastenka by the water. Over a series of nighttime conversations, they share their histories and hopes. She is waiting for someone else, but their new intimacy encourages him to imagine that companionship might finally replace the elaborate private life he has built.

About White Nights

The dreamer’s tender, expansive voice turns a brief acquaintance into an emotional world. His attention can be generous while still shaped by wishes Nastenka has not promised to fulfill. The sequence of nights gives their conversations a fragile boundary, distinct from ordinary daytime life. Consider how each person tells a story about waiting, and how listening to another person differs from finding a place for them in a cherished fantasy.

It suddenly seemed to me that I was lonely, that every one was forsaking me and going away from me. Of course, any one is entitled to ask who "every one"…
