Mole abandons spring cleaning and discovers the pleasures of the river through his friendship with Rat. Their life among Badger, Toad and other neighbors combines boating and hospitality with adventures prompted by Toad's restless enthusiasm for new forms of excitement.

About The Wind in the Willows

The book alternates between quiet attention to home and landscape and expansive comic action. Friendship involves both shared pleasure and the less agreeable work of confronting a companion's recklessness. Changes of season give each place a different emotional character, making belonging something sustained through visits, memory and practical care.

Reading focus

Compare the river's quiet pleasures with Toad's appetite for novelty and the demands both place on friendship.
