Continue readingAbout The Voyage Out
The voyage removes familiar surroundings without making social expectations disappear. Conversation becomes a way to discover possibilities and a means of imposing ready-made judgments. Follow Rachel’s responses to music and talk, noticing how often other people speak as though they understand what her life should become while her own sense of it is still taking shape.
Reading focus
Listen to the competing conversations around Rachel as travel opens possibilities that other people are quick to define on her behalf.

Opening excerpt
As the streets that lead from the Strand to the Embankment are very narrow, it is better not to walk down them arm-in-arm. If you persist, lawyers’ clerks will have to make flying leaps into the mud; young lady typists will have to fidget behind you. In the streets of London where beauty goes unregarded, eccentricity must pay the penalty, and it is better not to be very tall, to wear a long blue cloak, or to beat the air with your left hand.
