The Garden Party

Katherine Mansfield

Complete text
ShortEnglish

The Sheridans prepare a garden party on a perfect day, and Laura delights in the arrangements and the workmen's company. News from a nearby working-class household interrupts the preparations, forcing her to question whether the celebration can proceed as though nothing has changed.

About The Garden Party

Mansfield stays close to Laura's shifting sensations, allowing delight, embarrassment, sympathy, and social reassurance to follow rapidly upon one another. Flowers, food, clothes, and the physical distance between households carry the class contrast. The story leaves emotional understanding less settled than a simple lesson about privilege would suggest.

Reading focus

Follow a young hostess's unsettled response when a beautiful celebration meets suffering just beyond her family's carefully arranged grounds.
