Complete textA young man rents a furnished room in New York while searching for a woman he has lost. Signs left by former occupants and an unexpected sensory impression make the impersonal lodging seem connected to the person he hopes to find.

The room is read like a record whose fragments invite interpretation without providing reliable context. Smell, worn furnishings and small discarded objects make absence unusually palpable. The narrator's broader account of transient city life places this private search within a world where many people pass through the same spaces unnoticed.

Opening excerpt
Restless, shifting, fugacious as time itself is a certain vast bulk of the population of the red brick district of the lower West Side. Homeless, they have a hundred homes. They flit from furnished room to furnished room, transients forever—transients in abode, transients in heart and mind. They sing “Home, Sweet Home” in ragtime; they carry their lares et penates in a bandbox; their vine is entwined about a picture hat; a rubber plant is their fig tree.
