The framing narrator reminds readers that this intimate history has been reconstructed through partial knowledge. Winter, travel, and the condition of a struggling farm give emotional confinement a physical form. Compare what Ethan can imagine with what he can afford, and consider how dependence turns even a seemingly simple choice into a burden distributed across several people.
Reading focus
Watch the tension between imagined escape and material dependence within a winter landscape that makes confinement physically tangible.
